In 2023 I campaigned on making sure utility companies were properly taking care of the equipment including poles. Last night City Council voted to allow for Verizon to maintain and install cable throughout the city. I would hope they continue to hold them all accountable in these agreements to prevent this from being fatal. The General Assembly needs to their part for the safety of all Virginians as well. Next time while driving through our community notice how many damaged power poles are leaning and barely standing. In some cases with either power or telecommunications wires still attached. This continues to be an issue where the major utilities don't follow up and secure these poles correctly. As your Senator I was motivated by a story of a young boy that was hit by a falling pole in 2015 and was ready to champion legislation that would have held utility companies accountable and imposed fines if the poles weren't properly removed and replaced within weeks rather then years. This is so wrong at all levels. As your Senator I would have champion new legislation that any vehicles used in this manor once impounded would be destroyed not sold or returned to the owner. This goes for ATVs as well.
