Pepper Guru Traveling the World in Search of Peppers
pepperguru.com As a young boy, I was obsessed with nature, wildlife and gardening. My first encounter with a C.

My main curiosity was soil biology and it’s role in growing the healthiest plants possible. In 1994 I planted some Thai Dragon peppers in our garden and my dad would dare me to try them before he would eat them. chinense pepper was at the age of 16. That fruity, smoky, citrusy burst, followed by an extreme heat, was unlike anything I had ever tasted in my garden before. This new world of flavors s

parked what would become a life long infatuation and set me on a quest, Traveling The World In Search of Peppers. Fast forward to present with nearly 30 years of cultivation experience, field collections abroad, trades and friendships made, the pepper community looks much different than it did back in the 1990’s. I’ve administrated some of the world’s largest cultivation forums and continue to share my passion with other pepper enthusiasts across various platforms. I now travel the world in search of my favorite pepper varieties from their region of origin. Nothing is more rewarding than hand picking peppers in each village, farm or hidden trail we discover on our adventures along the way. The people we meet and the friendships we make are what truly breathes life into our journey. The shared passion for peppers across so many different cultures may just be the key to understanding that we are all more alike than we realize.

Rooster Spur from Virgil T Ainsworth of Laurel, Mississippi! The Capsicum frutescens version!

Plants that produce so many delicious, little firecracker peppers, you may need help picking them! Forget Tabasco peppers.
These Rooster Spurs from Virgil's family farm are the king of Capsicum frutescens.

When it comes to Capsicum chinense and its journey out of the Orinoco Delta and into the Caribbean, the SRTSL “Sara Ragoonanan Trinidad Scorpion Long” stands as one of the greats we are left with. During the superhot boom of the 90’s into the early 2000’s these stood out. Just another sibling line and progeny of a legend that began 5000 years ago, but these elongated, wrinkly little devils were special. They are among some of the best tasting superhot peppers known to collectors and they paved they way for every superhot we’ve come to love thereafter.

These ‘Rancho Vigle’ Capsicum chinense peppers have quickly become some of my favorite Habanero varieties. They have this lovely C. chinense dominant flavor but with something a little extra. Possible some C frutescens hidden within the genetics along the way. That placenta runs the entire length of the fruit inside and is full of spongy goodness. This one may be worth incorporating into a superhot hybrid that you’d like to get more placenta into. We picked this one up on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos. It’s was cultivated by a family that has lived on the island for generations. When I eat these peppers, I’m immediately reminded of the genuine kindness of the Gorozabels and the stories they shared with us during our stay 🙏❤️🌶️🇪🇨

It’s always a welcome surprise when friends show up to the pepper patch with homemade goodies!

Our buddy Tim showed up bearing gifts of various pepper jams, cowboy candy, and hot sauces that he made! The Death Spiral sauce he made was really good and it was one of his first sauces!

Naturally, I talked his ear off, ranted about the origin of superhot peppers, renaming peppers and gave him some sauce making tips to nail down consistency.

Thanks for stopping by dude! Much appreciated! 🙏

This Moruga line that I found at Finca Holanda in La Florida, Colombia is really starting to blast off. It’s out grown its isolation net and now it’s time to allow the natural predators to come in and handle any aphids we may have been protecting! Have at it Mother Nature!

In 2019 I touched down at the airport in Santa Cruz de La Sierra in Bolivia. I was on the hunt for an endangered wild Capsicum species. I headed southwest on highway 7 towards the town of Samaipata.

Just before I got there, I stopped in a little village known as Bermejo. This is where you can find the Cuevas Waterfalls.

After talking with some locals, they led me to a lone, sickly looking Capsicum baccatum var baccatum plant that they refered to only as “Ulupica”.

I’ve enjoyed growing and eating these lovely, pungent, red and yellow berries in my garden ever since. Like many of the South American landrace hemerophile peppers, these come in Red or Yellow.

You will never see the results of cross pollination on the plant where it took place.

You will only see the results of cross pollination once you grow out the seeds that are inside the fruit that was cross pollinated.

In some cases with interspecific cross pollination, the more trained eye can notice longer ripening times, or slightly smaller fruit forming from the flower that was properly emasculated and pollinated with the donor. In those cases seed count could potentially be very low as well.

Finally, while natural cross pollination within the capsicum genus is less likely than the flower selfing, it does happen quite often if you have a healthy pollinator population. Telling growers “cross pollination is rare, don’t worry about it” is not even close to accurate. Most people around the world have pollinators. If you don’t, you’re in the minority.
