Today, we celebrate not only the anniversary of a book, but the dedication, courage, and creativity it took to bring it to life. Ashleigh S. Wilkerson has been a driving force at BlackGold Publishing with over 8 titles with us and so much talent it pops at the seams! What began as an idea and a meeting between a new author and a team, became several published works, multiple book events and signings, and eight years later, she and her works remain a testament to the power of storytelling.

Good morning and Happy Black History Month! For Today, February 6th, we’re honoring ✨Frances Ellen Watkins Harper✨ for BlackGold’s !

Harper was a poet, abolitionist, and public intellectual at a time when Black women were not expected to speak publicly—let alone shape political thought. Born free in 1825, she used literature, lectures, and essays to argue against slavery while also critiquing racism, sexism, and economic exploitation within a so-called “free” society.

She was one of the first Black women to publish fiction in the United States, and her work consistently centered Black women’s moral authority, labor, and interior lives—long before those conversations were even considered to have any real validity.

What stands out to us is how intentional she was. Harper didn’t just write to be heard; she wrote knowing just how influential her work would be. Her speeches, stories and published literature treated Black women as thinkers, builders, and ethical leaders, not just bodies lost to history.

Before feminism had language that included us. There was Frances—doing the work anyway and for that, we honor her today and every day. Thank you Francis! ✨
