Plastic Bobbin vs Metal Bobbin

Which One Should You Use?

Not all bobbins are the same — and using the wrong bobbin can cause stitching problems, tension issues, or even damage your machine.

The most important rule is this:

Always use the bobbin type your machine was designed for.

Plastic Bobbins

Plastic bobbins are most commonly used in top-loading sewing machines.

Why use them:
• Lightweight
• Easy to see thread color and amount
• Designed to work smoothly in drop-in bobbin systems

Best for:

✔ Top-loading / drop-in bobbin machines

Important:

Even if another bobbin looks “almost the same,” small differences in size or shape can affect your stitching.

Metal Bobbins

Metal bobbins are usually used in front-loading sewing machines.

Why use them:
• Strong and durable
• Designed for bobbin cases used in front-loading systems
• Often preferred for older or industrial-style machines

Best for:

✔ Front-loading bobbin machines

Why You Shouldn’t Mix Them

Using the wrong bobbin can lead to:
• thread jamming
• uneven stitches
• poor tension
• noisy sewing
• skipped stitches

Even if the bobbin fits inside, that does not mean it is the correct one.

Best Tip

If you’re not sure which bobbin to buy:

✔ Check your sewing machine manual
✔ Use the same bobbin type that came with your machine
✔ When in doubt, buy by machine model, not by appearance

Simple Rule to Remember

Top-loading machine = usually plastic bobbin
Front-loading machine = usually metal bobbin

But always double-check your machine first.
