On this day, Prince Hall and fourteen other Free Black men were initiated into British Army Lodge No. 441, laying the foundation for what would become Prince Hall Freemasonry—the oldest continuously operating Black-led fraternal institution in the United States.

At a time when freedom was denied and opportunity restricted, these 15 men chose brotherhood, character, and moral leadership. Their courage did more than shape a fraternity—it helped shape a people.

Today, we honor their names, their resolve, and their enduring legacy.

Fraters & Loyal Ladies:

It is with profound sorrow and deep reverence that we notify the membership of the passing of Mrs. Diann Hawkins, the beloved mother of our Sovereign Grand Commander, Dr. Corey D. Hawkins, Sr., 33°.

This is an immeasurable loss not only to the Hawkins family, but also to the United Supreme Council, as our Sovereign Grand Commander grieves the loss of a matriarch whose life, love, and legacy helped shape the man who now leads this historic institution. We ask the entire membership to hold Dr. Hawkins and his family close in your prayers, reflections, and hearts during this most difficult time.

Out of respect for the family as they mourn, we respectfully request that the membership refrain from personal calls, messages, or inquiries to the Sovereign Grand Commander and his immediate family in the immediate future. Further information, including arrangements and appropriate opportunities for expressions of condolence, will be shared when and if the family authorizes their release.

Let us, as Fraters & Loyal Ladies, demonstrate our unity, discipline, and compassion by honoring their need for privacy and peace, while offering our collective prayers and support.

Once again, we ask that you keep the Hawkins family uplifted during this period of bereavement.

A message from our SGC Dr. Corey D Hawkins, 33 Esq.

Greetings:

Now that a couple of weeks have passed since the close of our annual session, I pray that you all are rested and are back to your usual routines. I want to thank the Orient of Tennessee and each of you for helping to make the 139th Annual Session of the United Supreme Council, 33°, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite
of Freemasonry, Prince Hall Affiliation, Southern Jurisdiction, USA, Inc., a great success. This was a historic occasion and one of the best we have ever had. The work that you put in was very noticeable and is very much appreciated. Also, the decorum exhibited during the entire session was splendid. Together, we continue to make improvements as we Rebuild the Rite, Stone by Stone.

A survey, concerning your experiences, has been sent out to attendees. Thank you so much for your candid feedback. This will help us to improve your membership experience. Currently, I am in the process of developing an Annual Session Committee, which will relieve the “host Orient” of most of the duties and pressures of being “the host”, regardless of the Orient where we may be holding our convention.

Again, thank you for a wonderful 139th Annual Session. Thank you for what you have done, are doing, and will do. I look forward to seeing you in Birmingham, Alabama next year for our 140th Annual Session. God bless each of you and long live our beloved United Supreme Council!
