WHEN LIVESTOCK GOES MISSING, EVERYTHING CAN CHANGE FAST

It’s amazing how quickly a friendly, tame show steer can become extremely difficult to approach once it’s loose and operating on instinct.

That’s where a thermal drone can become an invaluable tool.

We brought the drone in, located this steer in rugged mountain terrain, and then used the aerial view to guide the recovery teams over multiple ridges directly to its location.

Because the steer did not want to be caught, a tranquilizer team was brought in. From the air, we were able to maintain visual contact and even use the drone to help distract the steer while the team safely got into position.

Steer located. Safely tranquilized. Loaded into the trailer. HOME SAFE. 🙌

This is a perfect example of how thermal drones can be used for much more than lost pets or deer recovery. In lost-livestock situations, being able to locate, monitor, and guide recovery teams from the air can completely change the operation.

OVER A MILE AWAY — RECOVERED WITH THE RIGHT HELP

Rain had washed away the blood trail, and this deer ended up traveling **over a mile from the shot location.** That’s a lot of ground to cover when the visible sign disappears.

This is exactly why I encourage hunters to know their local **deer recovery professionals before they ever need one.**

Whether that recovery involves a **tracking dog or a thermal drone**, both are valuable tools in the hands of experienced people. The goal is the same: **recover the animal, save the meat, and prevent a deer from going to waste.**

In this case, I was called in with the thermal drone. We got in the air and **located the deer in just three minutes**, over a mile from where the recovery started.

When the blood trail ends, your options don't.

**Don't give up on the deer. Call a recovery professional and use the resources available to you.**

A SIGHTING CAN CHANGE AN ENTIRE LOST-DOG SEARCH

One of the biggest lessons I've learned during lost-dog searches is just how valuable one good sighting can be.

I've seen it happen firsthand.

A dog can be missing for days. The family is searching. Flyers are everywhere. People are watching. We're trying to figure out where the dog may have traveled.

Then the phone rings.

“I think I just saw the dog.”

That one report can completely change the search.

A recent sighting gives us something incredibly valuable:

Information.

Where was the dog?

What time was it seen?

Which direction was it traveling?

Was it walking, running, feeding or bedded down?

Did it cross a road, disappear into a field, follow a creek or enter the woods?

These details can help us start identifying travel corridors, patterns and areas where the dog may feel safe enough to settle.

But there's something else that can make a sighting even more valuable:

TAKE A PICTURE OR VIDEO.

Even if you're not sure it's the missing dog.

Even if it's blurry.

Even if the dog is far away.

Even if you think, “That's probably not it.”

Take the picture anyway.

That photo or video may allow the owner to identify the dog. It can confirm the time and location. Sometimes it gives us clues about the dog's condition, direction of travel or behavior.

And sometimes it's the piece of information we've been waiting for.

This is also why flyers still matter.

A flyer puts that dog's face in front of hundreds or thousands of additional eyes. Someone who wouldn't normally think twice about seeing a dog along a road suddenly realizes:

“Wait... I've seen that dog before.”

But a flyer can only do so much.

Reporting the sighting is imperative.

Don't assume somebody else already called.

Don't wait until tomorrow.

And don't worry about being wrong.

If you think you saw a missing dog, report it as soon as possible.

Give the exact location. Give the time. Tell us which direction it was going. And if it's safe to do so, get a picture or video without chasing or approaching the dog.

In several of the recent searches I've been involved with, sightings have been pivotal in helping us understand where these dogs are moving and where we need to focus our efforts.

Sometimes bringing a lost dog home doesn't start with finding the dog.

It starts with somebody paying attention—and making the call.

📸 SEE IT. PHOTOGRAPH IT. REPORT IT.

That one sighting might be exactly what a family and search team need to help bring their dog home.

This is the update we have all been waiting and praying for.

Storm is HOME SAFE. 💚

There are so many people who played a part in bringing Storm home that it is hard to know where to begin.

To everyone who shared his posts, helped hang flyers, drove around looking, kept their eyes open, and reported sightings — THANK YOU. Every share and every flyer put more eyes on the search, and every sighting gave us another piece of the puzzle.

Once we were able to identify Storm’s core safe area, the local property owners became absolutely invaluable. They were reporting sightings, sometimes within minutes of seeing him, giving us the information we needed to understand his routine and movement.

That information allowed us to stop searching blindly and start building a plan around where Storm felt safe.

A huge thank you to the property owner who allowed us to set up on their property, provide a quiet and safe place for Storm, establish food, monitor the area, and ultimately set the trap. Your willingness to help gave us exactly what we needed.

And a very special thank you to the volunteers from Find Toby and everyone else who helped build and prepare the trap. That trap ultimately became the tool that brought Storm HOME. Your time, effort, knowledge, and willingness to jump in and help made a difference.

This rescue is such a powerful example of why I say:

IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO BRING A LOST DOG HOME.

No single person did this.

It was the people sharing.

It was the people hanging flyers and getting his face in front of the community.

It was the people watching.

It was the people reporting sightings.

It was the property owners allowing access and helping us monitor him.

It was the volunteers.

It was the cameras, food station, trap, and all the information we gathered along the way.

Most importantly, it was everyone working toward the same goal while giving Storm the space and security he needed.

Every person played a part. Every sighting mattered. Every flyer mattered. Every share mattered.

To everyone who followed Storm’s story, prayed for him, worried about him, shared his information, hung flyers, searched for him, reported a sighting, or helped in any way — THANK YOU.

You helped bring this boy home.

STORM IS SAFE. STORM IS HOME. 💚🐾

And this is the ending we were all hoping for.

YOUR BROADHEADS DON’T CARE WHERE YOUR FIELD POINTS HIT.

Before season gets here, tune your bow.

If you’re comfortable doing it yourself, get it dialed in. If you’re not, take it to a local archery shop and let someone who knows what they’re doing help you.

And then comes the part too many hunters skip:

SHOOT YOUR BROADHEADS.

Don’t assume they’re going to impact exactly where your field points do. Shoot them. Verify them. Make adjustments if needed.

And don’t just test one broadhead and assume the rest are good. Shoot and verify every broadhead you plan to hunt with.

When that opportunity finally comes, you owe it to the animal to know exactly where that arrow is going.

Tune it. Shoot it. Verify it. Then hunt with confidence. 🏹

Sometimes the first step isn’t the rescue — it’s learning the dog.

We’re heading out to do some reconnaissance on a dog that’s been difficult to secure. The goal tonight is to observe from a distance, learn its movements, identify where it feels safe, and start developing a plan.

Where is it traveling? Where is it bedding down? What areas does it keep returning to?

That information helps us determine the best locations for feed stations, cameras, and eventually a trap.

With a dog in survival mode, rushing the process can push it somewhere else. Sometimes the best thing you can do is watch, learn, and build the plan around the dog’s behavior.

Patience. Observation. Planning. Then ex*****on. 🐾

ONE YEAR AGO — TEAMWORK SAVED DALLAS CHEDDAR 🐾

It’s hard to believe we’re coming up on the one-year anniversary of one of the most unforgettable rescues I’ve ever been a part of — Dallas Cheddar.

This was the dog wandering through a cornfield with a cheese ball barrel stuck over his head. His story eventually went viral and was seen by people all over, but behind that story was something much more important:

A group of people who refused to give up on him.

I want to give a special shoutout and thank you to Canine Rescue of Central Pennsylvania and these four incredible ladies who were right there in that cornfield with me that night.

We worked together. We communicated. We trusted each other. Everybody had a role, and nobody cared who got the credit.

The only thing that mattered was saving that dog.

And we did.

Dallas Cheddar wasn't just "found." His life was literally saved that night. We were fortunate enough to capture the rescue and eventually share his incredible story with thousands and thousands of people.

But when I look back at this picture, what I remember most isn't the viral story.

I remember the teamwork.

This is what can happen when rescues, drone pilots, volunteers, owners, and communities put egos aside and work toward the same goal.

Sometimes it takes one person.

Sometimes it takes an entire team standing in a cornfield in the middle of the night.

Dallas Cheddar needed a team. And that night, he had one. ❤️

Thank you again to Canine Rescue of Central Pennsylvania and these ladies for being part of a night I'll never forget.

Working together saves lives. Dallas Cheddar is living proof.

MAJOR UPDATE ON STORM — WE HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE

I was back out flying and searching, and we now have multiple VERIFIED sightings of Storm. Even better, we believe we have identified the core safe area where Storm has been hiding and spending time.

He is coming into food. That is a HUGE step forward.

We now have a plan in place. We will be using a controlled feed station, cameras, and a trap in hopes of safely bringing Storm home.

At this point, one of the most important things we can do is keep this area as quiet and undisturbed as possible. Storm has found a place where he feels safe. We do not want extra people searching the area, approaching him, calling for him, or putting pressure on him and causing him to leave.

Please DO NOT chase, approach, or attempt to catch Storm. If you see him, take a photo or video from a distance, note the location and direction of travel, and report the sighting.

Thank you so much to everyone who has been watching, reporting sightings, sharing his information, and genuinely caring about getting this boy home. Those sightings helped us put the pieces together and get to this point.

Now it's about patience, keeping him comfortable, and letting the plan work.

We know Storm is alive. We know where he feels safe. He's coming to food.

Now let's bring Storm home. 💚🐾
