One of Them Ones by Yola Money

This was a great read! Every time I thought the story was about to go one way, it went in a completely different direction. That’s what kept me hooked…the storyline wasn’t predictable.

I really thought Flip was going to make it out. I pictured him becoming a baseball star, ending up with the girl, and getting that Jason’s Lyric-type happy ending. But the streets had other plans.

What got me was that Flip was trying to escape the life he was born into and create something better for himself. Unfortunately, the circumstances that made him so desperate to change his future also became his downfall. It was a reminder that sometimes talent alone isn’t enough when you’re constantly fighting your environment.

I definitely recommend this one if you’re looking for a street novel. Urban Fiction Author | Music Producer

The Ballad of Black Tom -by Victor LaValle

My son said I never post him, so here he is reading the back of this book and pretending he actually read it. 😂 He did not. But enjoy the video anyway.

Spoiler alert -

I actually liked this one. It’s about a struggling musician who gets pulled into some weird mess with a mysterious package, crooked cops, and some dark supernatural stuff. Things go left pretty fast, and it turns into revenge and chaos. Overall Great and short read. I have another book of his I need to start.

I am not really a fan of urban fiction.. but this was a oldie and a goodie. This book had me hooked from the first few chapters. The drama kept me turning pages, and I really enjoyed the journey. However my only complaint? The ending. It felt rushed, and I wasn’t satisfied with how everything wrapped up. You mean to tell me lives were lost and yall just buddied it up? Overall, it was still a good read, just not the ending I was hoping for.

Revisited Magically Black and Other Essays and loved it just as much the second time around…..This collection perfectly balances laugh-out-loud humor with honest conversations about the Black experience. I laughed at the stories about edibles, selling a house, and roaches, but also appreciated the essays about identity and not shrinking yourself for others. 10/10…highly recommend!

Tried JoJo’s in DC and it did not disappoint! I had the salmon with bacon-wrapped shrimp and everything was delicious. After dinner, we listened to some live jazz, which made the whole experience even better. It definitely gives small speakeasy vibes (minus the smoke ). I’d absolutely go back!
