From a book for people who appreciate insight and ideas, "The Best Chronicles of Rubem Alves":

Psychoanalysis is an eye with which we see a world different from the others. It wasn’t psychoanalysis that discovered these worlds. It had already been seen by mystics, poets, and artists since time immemorial. They saw it and turned it sensible through painting, sculpture, music, poems, songs, cathedrals, cuisine, and literary works. The genius of psychoanalysis is that it discovered that the works of art are more than works of art: They are entries into the world of the soul. A dream—the prototype of all the works of art!..
Psychoanalysis sees the body as a work of art. A work of art incarnate. Paraphrasing scripture, which says “The Word is made Flesh,” I say, “Beauty is made Body.”…But its relationship with this incarnate Beauty is the same relationship that exists between rational criticism and emotional experience. Psychoanalysis, as theory, is a rational exercise that investigates the “reasons,” the human meaning that is found in the roots of this incarnate work of art. But the emotions are in another place.

From Tender Returns:
Beside the girl sits a stranger: the doctor. For isn’t the doctor a stranger? Yes, a stranger because he doesn’t belong in the daily life of the family. Nevertheless, when there’s a struggle between love and death, he’s the one who’s called.
The doctor thinks hard. His elbow is resting on his knee. His chin is rest in his hand. He isn’t think ing about what to do. The potions on the little table show that what can be done has been done. His meditative form occurs after carrying out the medical measures, after depleting his knowledge and his power. It would be good if he could withdraw, for he has already done what he can do… But no. He remains. He waits. He has to live with his powerlessness. Maybe he’s praying. Everyone prays when love finds itself powerless. Prayer is this: this communion with love above the emptiness… Maybe he is silently asking forgiveness form the parents for being so weak in the face of death. And maybe his meditative waiting is a confession. I, too, am suffering…

Nova tradução em inglês--"The Best Chronicles of Rubem Alves":

"I write like a sleepwalker, perhaps in the hope that words might succeed in diminishing my pain. But I don’t want the pain to diminish. I don’t want to be cured. I don’t want to be consoled. I don’t want to become happy again. When pain dies down it’s because forgetfulness has done its job. But I don’t want to forget. Love can’t stand forgetfulness."

June 21 is the birthday of Machado de Assis, Brazil’s most renowned writer and one of the most influential in the history of literature. He was born in Rio de janeiro in 1839 to a son of freed slaves and a Portuguese washerwoman from the Azores. As an adolescent, he worked in a bookstore and became an apprentice typographer. He published a poem at the age of 15 and soon began selling stories to newspapers. At first, they were merely recounts of social life in the Brazilian capital as it wrestled with the rigid social structure it had inherited from Portugal, tales of bureaucracy and young people trying to marry into wealthier circumstances. After a serious nervous crisis caused by epilepsy, he suddenly began writing more serious, sophisticated works. His style varied from impressionism to realism to surrealism. He wrote stories, novels, essays, and poems. He taught himself English, German, and Greek. He founded the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Harold Bloom’s list of histories 100 greatest writers put him in the ranks of Dante, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Flaubert, Twain, Joyce, and Swift. He died in 1908.

New London Librarium is proud to have published two collections of Machado’s stories, most never before translated into English. Their titles are Ex Cathedra: Stories by Machado de Assis and Miss Dollar: Stories by Machado de Assis. Both are bilingual, with English and Portuguese side by side.
