I was asked recently about the character names I had chosen in the book and how I came up with them. So I thought I would share.
My girl friends and my sister’s name were chosen at random. It purely came from a name that popped in my head as I tried to apply one to each person. I had some fun with it and tried not to overthink it.
My daughter’s name, Cora, was chosen as it was the other name that was in the running for naming her when she was born.
Andrew, I wanted to capture what felt to be a similar name to me. It’s not similar but it had to feel that way. I’ve never met a mean Andrew personally but after running through a handful of names I felt it fit. The longer name maybe?
My character name Jolene was easy. From Jolene by Dolly Parton. A song that came on around the house often when Andrew had his music on. This Jolene is singing!

Recent updates have reminded me of something I think every transplant recipient eventually comes to understand: a transplant is not a cure—it’s a second chance.

My transplant was truly a miracle, but it didn’t mean the battles would end. It meant I was given another opportunity to navigate this world, one day at a time, with the time God has blessed me with.

There have been good days, difficult days, hospital stays, procedures, setbacks, and moments when I’ve wondered what comes next. But through it all, I continue to remind myself that this life I have today is a bonus—time I wasn’t guaranteed, time I’m grateful to have, and time I want to make meaningful.

I don’t know exactly what tomorrow holds. But I know I’m still here.

And as long as God continues to bless me with another day, I’ll keep fighting, keep moving forward, and keep sharing this journey in hopes that it helps someone else understand what life after transplant really looks like.

A transplant may not be the end of the battle. But it can be the beginning of a second chance. And I am grateful for every single day of mine. 🙏💚
