A note about shipping from Brynmorgen Press: With the launch of Chainmaking for Jewelers in 2025, Brynmorgen Press began selling directly to customers through our website. It was a step we took to counteract some of the frustrating behaviors we were encountering with online booksellers and so far it's been great.

For the rollout we decided to eat a lot of the shipping costs and were able to offer free domestic shipping and a low flat rate anywhere else in the world. The response was tremendous, we sold over a thousand copies of Matthieu's book in a month! We were delighted to find that we had enthusiastic readers all around the world from Australia to Lebanon, Peru, Chile, Malta, the UK, Germany and more. The reality is that shipping abroad often costs as much as the book itself, sometimes much more. This is the reason it is often hard to get books to readers abroad even through Amazon and other big retailers.

It was more valuable than advertising dollars for us to ship some of these books at a loss and we are absolutely delighted that our books are getting into the hands of craftspeople everywhere. While we will have to raise our prices in the new year, we have decided to keep offering a flat fee for our international customers, eating some of the cost to increase our readership and support the community.

Our rates are now a flat $5 to ship any book(s) within the United States, $60 plus $5 per additional book anywhere else in the world. I know it seems expensive, but trust us, it's not cheap shipping heavy books. As an alternative for anyone who can't afford all that, the digital edition is always available. Thanks very much to all of you and happy jewelry making!

A Book Every Jeweler Should Spend Time With

Every once in a while, a book lands on your bench that makes you slow down.

I was recently sent the book "Chainmaking For Jewelers" to review by Matthieu Cheminee, (Brynmorgen Press) and it’s one of the most comprehensive resources on chain making I’ve encountered in over 40 years at the bench.

At more than 530 pages, this book is not a quick overview—it’s a deep, thoughtful exploration of virtually every aspect of chain creation and assembly. From foundational structures to advanced construction, the level of detail reflects a deep respect for the craft.

What I appreciate most is that this book functions as a working reference, not shelf decoration. It’s the kind of resource you return to when solving design problems, teaching technique, or stretching beyond familiar patterns.

Chain making demands patience, precision, and humility. This book honors all three. For jewelers who take their craft seriously—whether learning, teaching, or refining their skills—this is a resource worth spending real time with.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book for review. I received no other compensation. I share resources like this because I want to help jewelers grow in their craft.

“Professional Jewelry Making” by Alan Revere is a book with a long history. Based on Alan’s German education in goldsmithing and his decades of teaching at the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts, this large-format 340-page book has become a standard in the field. First published in 1991 by Van Nostrand Reinjold, it was redesigned and updated by Brynmorgen Press in 2011.
One measure of it’s influence is the fact that it prompted the creation of a Facebook Group called “Let’s Make Professional Jewelry” that now boasts more than 40,000 members around the world!

Stamping is a universal technique that can be found in in every culture with a metalworking tradition. The process is simple, and with the ability to make unique tools in the workshop, jewelers will find they have entered an arena of endless possibilities.
"The Art of Stamping" provides valuable information on selecting the best steel, designing and creating unique stamps, as well as heat treating techniques that will yield tools that will last for generations. Profiles of jewelers known for their work in stamping provide background offering a full picture of the art and the people who make it.
Matthieu Cheminée is a Parisian-born jeweler, photographer and teacher whose training spans three continents. As a young man he lived in Taos, New Mexico where he learned traditional jewelry techniques from Native American masters. He then moved to Mali in West Africa where he worked with jewelers and first encountered the legacy of this ancient craft. "The Art of Stamping" holds an important place in the Brynmorgen Press collection. In addition to extensively covering this universal and versatile metalworking technique, Matthieu has conducted interviews with artists who specialize in stamping, collecting cultural history from around the world.

Brynmorgen Press, an independent publisher based in the US, announces the publication of "Jewelry Technology in the Ancient & Medieval World" by noted British expert Jack Ogden. This important book is impressive in several ways; first for it’s broad span, which ranges from early Egyptian metalwork through the late Middle Ages; next for the breadth of information, drawn from period writings in many languages, and through hands-on examination of hundreds of objects over the course of the author’s five-decade career. Weighing in at 400+ pages with more than 700 color photographs, this hardcover book will be a mainstay of research and information for collectors, curators, and anyone interested in the origins of jewelry and the tools and techniques used by goldsmiths around the world today. Like all Brynmorgen books, "Jewelry Technology in the Ancient & Medieval World" is available in print and digital editions. To see sample pages, visit www.Brynmorgen.com.

These illustrations, pulled from the book, provide examples of the diversity, wealth of information and clarity of descriptions that are typical throughout the book.
