Lancaster County’s 17 school districts will receive an extra $21.8 million from the state’s $50.1 billion 2025-26 budget, including an estimated $4.2 million in cyber charter reform savings, after state legislators approved the budget Wednesday.

Much of the increase in funding to schools this year comes from a second installment of the adequacy and tax equity payments needed to fix Pennsylvania’s school funding system.

Gov. Josh Shapiro and Democratic leaders are considering a budget deal that would pull Pennsylvania out of an interstate program that charges power plant operators for releasing carbon into the atmosphere, according to a source with knowledge of discussions.

Lawmakers involved in talks to end the four-month budget impasse have been quiet about what is on and off the table, and the exact details of a plan that would formally end the state’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) aren’t known.

For Duane Romberger, organizing Lancaster Seminary’s first celebration of gay, le***an, bisexual and transgender students was meant to solve a practical problem.

As a divinity student, he needed to be supported by a local church in order to get his degree. But none of the churches in central Pennsylvania were officially open and affirming to LGBTQ+ people.

“The struggle and challenge was, if none of them are officially open to me, how do I even stay here until the second year,” Romberger said Sunday following a gathering marking the seminary’s 25th anniversary of publicly supporting LGBTQ+ students.

The Nov. 4 election saw three Democratic state Supreme Court justices easily retain their seats, virtually ensuring the party’s majority for at least another few years.

That could be significant for a lot of major cases pending before the court, on issues ranging from abortion to elections to criminal justice. The state Supreme Court often has the final say on major policy decisions that affect virtually every Pennsylvanian.

On the 41st day of a record-long government shutdown, the U.S. Senate voted 60 to 40 to approve a continuing resolution to reopen the government. The measure would fund much of the government through Jan. 30 and provide funding for some agencies through the end of next September.

But the shutdown will not end right away. The U.S. House of Representatives must also pass the legislation, which is not guaranteed, before President Donald Trump can sign it into law.
