In a world where there is already so much hurt, division, judgment, and a willingness to tear people down or discard them, particularly Black and Brown people, I believe we have to be just as intentional about lifting people up.

That’s one of the reasons Hope Station, Cumberland County Annual Awards Dinner means so much to me. It’s our opportunity to recognize community leaders, celebrate their contributions, and remind them that their work, their leadership, and their impact matter.

This morning, I had the pleasure of joining Good Day PA with Donny Martinez, this year’s recipient of the Jim Washington Leadership Award. Donny represents what this recognition is all about: showing up, serving others, building bridges, and making our community better.

There are enough voices in this world telling people what’s wrong with them. At Hope Station, we want to be one of the voices reminding people of what is right with them.

In my latest PennLive column, I reflect on power, accountability, and what it truly means to lead when the stakes are high.

Leadership also requires to move forward. We cannot spend all our time looking backward, pointing fingers, or playing the blame game whenever things don’t go our way. At some point, those entrusted with power have to take responsibility for the present, make the tough decisions, and lead us toward what comes next.

You can acknowledge what came before without using it as an excuse for what is happening now.

Leadership isn’t just about having authority. It’s about what you choose to do with it.
