This is a sobbering reminder that the same is true for humans. Those struggling with addiction, homelessness, or life’s hardest battles are not defined by their circumstances. Beneath the struggles lies resilience, worth, and untold potential.

I'll take "things I never thought I'd be talking or learning about" for 10 Million Alex.

Most people know that I own and run my business entirely by myself for 9 years now. I wear all the hats🕵‍♀️

I have some heavy duty blockers on my website. Country blockers, VPN and IP blockers and bot blockers. I had to turn them off for a bit so that a report can be done on my website because it wouldn't read it the same way with a bot blocker on.

This is what happened in a matter of 35 minutes.
220 plus bots (because these are live notifications to my phone and I didn't catch it right away)😳

I'll explain for those that have a website or might be interested. Fyi, I come from 20 years of opening and running restaurants so I've had to learn all of these things. I'm going to be 62 in a few days so never say never!

Ashburn, VA is a major data center hub. It’s one of the biggest internet hubs in the U.S., and Amazon Web Services (AWS) has massive server farms there. We do obviously get visitors from Virginia but there are very telling ways to know that they are there intentionally. In fact there's info on one of these graphics, I cropped out that gives me a lot of information.

When traffic shows as coming from Amazon .com and/or Ashburn, it usually means it’s not actual human visitors, but bots, crawlers, or automated services running from Amazon Web servers.

That’s why you see dozens of “visitors” loading lots of pages very quickly.
Real people never move through a website like that. You can see one loaded 54 pages in just over 3 minutes.

The volume looks extreme because AWS traffic usually comes in bursts. They exist because the internet runs on bots, almost half of all web traffic worldwide is automated.

Types of bots:

1. Good bots:

Search engine crawlers (Google, Bing,Yahoo etc.).

Other indexing bots trying to scan your content.

2. Bad or spammy bots:

Analytics spam trying to inflate traffic.
(Our analytics are as true as it gets. We don't host contests where people jump on, vote and dip again or any other thing that uses the words nominate or contest)

Automated testing tools hitting a site repeatedly.

Content scrapers - bots copying text, images, or business listings for shady directories.🤨

Spam bots trying to find contact forms or comment sections to dump junk links.

Vulnerability scanners, automated scans looking for weak spots (these are constant on the internet, but Wix, what I use, usually blocks them before they do harm).

3. Neutral/annoying reasons for bots

Market research bots, companies scraping data about local businesses, prices, or content.

Competitor monitoring tools, sometimes other businesses (or their agencies) use bots to check your site.

AI training crawlers - some bots collect info to train AI models (these often come from AWS).

● Since we work with a lot of retail and brick and mortar businesses. ... think of it like your storefront on a busy street.
Most of the people walking by are normal folks, but every day surveyors, business brokers, and competitors also stop to peek inside.

They’re not there to shop, they’re just gathering info. I get this all the time but I watch my data like a hawk and have learned a lot over 9 years so I block pretty quickly if my blockers don't do it first.

And there you have it. Bots 101
