Guitar god Eddie Hazel passed away 33 years ago today. I think I post about this guy every year; sometimes twice a year! To me, Eddie Hazel remains the most under-appreciated guitar player in mainstream rock history. The mind-bending solo on “Maggot Brain” aside, this guy remains one of the best I’ve ever heard.

His solo album released in 1977 remained out-of-print on vinyl up until 2016. I found this OG at a local shop many years back. This cover of the Mamas & the Papas “California Dreamin” is so god damn funky & soulful. It’s right up there with the original, if not better! I really love his version of ’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” too, which is one of my personal favorite tunes by the Fab Four.

I’m thankful for companies like for giving things like this the boutique treatment:

1) “Idiot Box” - an extremely short-lived (only 6 episodes) series from the early 90’s starring and created, written & directed by & . Lots of practical effects and guest appearances by , , and more. I can’t wait to watch this because I never saw it when it aired. Amazing slipcover art by the one & only Johnny Ryan.

2) “Out of the Blue” - A film about a juvenile delinquent punk and her ex-con dad, played by the director of the film and legend himself, Dennis Hopper. I knew of this one, and saw it was on , , or .pulp at one point, but never actually watched it.

“Santa Sangre” - This one is just an upgrade to my single disc Blu-ray. Includes three other discs loaded with bonus material and the CD soundtrack. Alejandro Jodorowsky made some absolutely stunning films.

Joe Strummer died on this day in 2002. Can I be really honest without getting s**t for this? I’m not the biggest fan of The Clash. I don’t NOT like them, but the whole “only band that matters” thing was/is kinda silly to me.

That being said, the cultural importance of these records far outweighs the music for me. Not to mention, these specific copies can be partially credited with getting me into record collecting…

Some time in 2004 or early 2005, before I had a record player, I came upon a couple hundred good records for free. These were in there. I had a few records from years earlier that I just wanted to own (Skinny Puppy, Big Black, some Wax Trax! stuff, etc.) - but getting these forced me to get a turntable. And it’s all downhill coasting from there!

So needless to say, I might never part with these. Unless I happen upon some OG UK presses or something! 😏

A sincere thanks to and for simply existing in a time when the world probably needed them the most and influencing an innumerable amount of bands that I absolutely love. Rest in power, Joe.
