The Give-Way Vessel 🛑
The boat required to take early and substantial action to keep clear of the other vessel.

The Duty: Alter course or slow down early so your intentions are completely clear. Avoid cutting across the bow of the other boat.

Who is Give-Way?

Power vs. Power (Crossing): The boat that sees another powerboat on its starboard (right) side. (Think of it like driving: yield to the right!)

Sail vs. Sail (Different Tacks): The boat on port tack (wind hitting port side first) must give way to a boat on starboard tack.

Sail vs. Sail (Same Tack): The windward boat (upwind) must give way to the leeward boat.

Power vs. Sail: Power-driven vessels give way to sailing vessels (when under sail only).

Overtaking: ANY vessel passing another from behind is always the give-way vessel.

The Stand-On Vessel 🟢
The boat that has the duty to hold its position.

The Duty: Maintain course and speed so the give-way vessel can safely maneuver around you.

Crucial Rule: "Stand-on" does NOT mean you can ignore a collision! If the give-way vessel fails to move, the stand-on vessel must take avoiding action.
