This was taken last weekend, at peak snow depth...

The snow is already starting to melt. The temperature near Lake Michigan right now is almost 40 degrees. On my time out today, I saw patches of bare grass and ice fisherman out on a shallow "lake." Temperatures are supposed to continue like this for the next week, so I'm thinking it's probably going to be more grass than ice fisherman for the foreseeable future...

On the third, and final, day of my Mount Rogers - Grayson Highlands backpacking trip, I awoke to a beautiful sunrise. I followed the Appalachian Trail from Scales Campground to the Old Orchard Shelter before looping back to the Mount Rogers Trail, on the Lewis Fork Trail and Cliffside Trail.

Most of the day's hike was through the forest. The AT was rocky and lined with large, mossy boulders. The other trails followed the Lewis Fork. The sound of the flowing water was pleasant, and the trails were a bit soggy -- at times water even flowed around my feet. While it didn't offer the same spectacular views as the first two days of this trip, it was a satisfying conclusion to an excellent hike.

The full highlights from all three days of the trip are now streaming on the OutOnTrail YouTube channel! Stop by, and let us know how you found us!

On the second day of my Mount Rogers - Grayson Highlands trip, I followed the Appalachian Trail from Thomas K**b to Scales Campground. The early part of the day was all views, and I spotted some ponies while passing through Grayson Highlands State Park!

The full day's highlights will be streaming on YouTube starting tomorrow...

Last fall, I was lucky to have the opportunity to spend three days backpacking through the Jefferson National Forest and Grayson Highlands State Park, in Virginia. On the first day, I hiked from the Mount Rogers Trailhead to Thomas K**b, on the Mount Rogers Trail and the Appalachian Trail. It was mostly uphill, with mountain streams and a variety of fungi providing the visual highlights. The end of the day offered some spectacular views, though, and this may have been the best campsite I snagged in 2021!

You can check out the full highlights from Day 1 on YouTube, this Sunday at 11:00 AM Eastern.

No fooling, here! Hawksbill Mountain, in North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest, is a hike worthy of consideration if you're in the Asheville area.

Located about an hour's drive Northeast of the city, in the Linville Gorge Wilderness, this short (only a couple of miles) but steep (around 700 feet of elevation gain) hike offers 360-degree views from the summit and a couple of excellent views along the way. The only catch is that you need to take an unpaved Forest Service Road to reach the trailhead... A high-clearance vehicle is preferable, though not absolutely necessary.

You can check out the video of our hike on YouTube, starting this Sunday at 11:00 EDT!
