BLACK HISTORY IS HARTFORD HISTORY
Long before Juneteenth became a federal holiday, Hartford played a role in the fight for freedom, equality, education, and civil rights.
From abolitionists like James H. Mason and the publication of The Freedman's Journal, to the churches, businesses, educators, artists, and community leaders who helped shape our city, Hartford has a rich and often overlooked Black history.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It stands as a reminder that freedom, justice, and opportunity are causes that require continued participation from every generation.
Today we honor those who came before us, celebrate the contributions of Black Hartford residents past and present, and recognize the work still ahead as we build a stronger community together.
Hartford's story cannot be told without Black history.
And Black history is still being written every day.
