The Place, Guilford ‼️NOW OPEN FOR THE SEASON‼️
This is one of my favorite spots to visit in the spring/summer months when you’re looking for a taste of the CT shoreline. Just a quick trip down to Guilford and you’ve found the most unique spot that has history back to the 1940’s (read their story below!).
You’ll sit outside on tree stumps while you watch the team cook your fresh seafood over their out door fire-pit. Roasted clams, lobster, corn, steamers, fish, steak, chicken and more are on the menu, but in my opinion you have to get clams. It’s truly a unique experience that you will not forget. It’s BYOB, and cash only, so plan accordingly.
I’ve copied over their history from their website because if you plan to go, I think it’s worth knowing their amazing story!
In the 1940s, an old sailor known as Wh**ey started up an informal clambake by the side of Route 1 in Guilford, CT. Over time it grew into a real restaurant called Wh**ey’s where travelers enjoyed his special roasted clams while sitting on tree stump instead of chairs. Wh**ey employed many local teens including the Knowles brothers, Gary and Vaughn. In 1971, Wh**ey’s was up for sale and Vaughn and his wife, Judy, decided to buy it and take over. When trying to pick a new name they remembered an old saying of Wh**ey’s...
“There’s no place, just like this place, anywhere near this place, so this must be the place.”
Soon after establishing The Place, Vaughn teamed up with his brother Gary, and they became co-owners of The Place Restaurant. They still run it together today, serving up the same roasted clams that got it all started, but the menu has expanded to include lobster, corn, steamers, fish, steak, chicken, and more. Today The Place has grown to about 50 tables, and the fire-pit is a sizzlin’ 18 feet long. But some things remain the same—every night is a cookout with good food and good friends!
