Have you heard of the Connecticut Compromise? On this day in 1787, the Constitutional Convention faced a deadlock over state representation. Also known as the Great Compromise, the agreement resolved the conflict between large and small states regarding representation in US Congress. It established a bicameral (two-tiered) legislature, including the House of Representatives —where seats are allocated based on population—and the Senate, which provides equal representation for each state. The Connecticut Compromise ensured both large and small states had a voice in the new government, preventing the stalemate and enabling the drafting of the Constitution.
