Back in the summer of 1988, the small rural community near Bishopville, South Carolina, was thrust into the national spotlight when reports surfaced of a terrifying creature lurking in the swamps near Scape Ore Road. Described as standing around 7 feet tall, covered in green, scaly skin, with glowing red eyes and three clawed fingers on each hand, the beast became known as The Lizard Man of Lee County.
The first widely publicized encounter came from a 17-year-old named Christopher Davis, who claimed that while changing a flat tire late at night near Scape Ore Swamp, he was chased by the creature. According to Davis, the Lizard Man leapt onto the roof of his car, leaving behind deep scratch marks and bite marks on the metal. What followed was a media frenzy — law enforcement received dozens of similar reports, and curious tourists flocked to the area, hoping for a glimpse of the green monster.
Local sheriff’s deputies investigated the sightings and even took plaster casts of what appeared to be three-toed footprints over 14 inches long. While skeptics offered theories ranging from bears to hoaxes, believers stood firm: something strange was out there in the swamps of Lee County.
Over the years, the legend only grew. The Lizard Man became a pop culture phenomenon, inspiring documentaries, T-shirts, souvenirs, and even a dedicated Lizard Man Festival. While sightings died down over time, new ones have occasionally emerged — including a 2015 photo that reignited interest in the mystery.
Today, the tale of The Lizard Man of Lee County is woven into South Carolina folklore. Whether you're a true believer or just fascinated by a good story, it's a reminder that the Lowcountry still has secrets waiting in the shadows of its swamps.
Just one more reason why the Carolinas are home to more than just beaches and BBQ — we’ve got monsters, too.
