Hey, Haskell. We have some news to share that isn't easy. We have two editions left before we enter uncharted waters- please see the attached letter for more information. We appreciate your patience and thoughts during this time. In addition, our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Please stay safe and well. (PS None of us at the newspaper have COVID-19)

"To our Town, Neighbors, and Beloved Subscribers:

Due to unforeseen circumstances, The Haskell News will suspend printing for a period of (14) days, or two newspaper editions. The last printed edition before this period will be Thursday, April 9th, 2020. The next two editions scheduled for April 16th & 23rd are hereby suspended.

What Happened and what does this mean?
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the National Disaster Declaration/State of Emergency conditions, the courthouse is only handling β€œessential matters of those that are of emergency nature and/or are urgent including arraignments, bond hearings, TECO’S, Emergency Guardianship proceedings and protective orders.” The extreme reduction of legal publications is an unforeseen circumstance that will prohibit our financial ability to publish for at least 14 days. This means that during this period, you will not receive a newspaper, and they will not be available in town for purchase.

What about my subscription?
We will be adding all missed weeks on to every subscriber currently in our system. In the meantime, we are working on a way for you to renew or subscribe online, though no one will be deleted from the system during this time for non-payment.

Are we returning?
While circumstances well beyond our control are changing rapidly, we do plan to return to normal operations as soon as possible. In addition, we are considering other options to return sooner rather than later if circumstances take longer than expected to improve.

Need to Talk?
During this time, if you have any questions, I can be reached anytime via e-mail at [email protected]. You are also welcome to call us at (918) 482-5619, though messages will likely only be checked once per week and communication could be delayed.

What we want you to know:
This decision was incredibly difficult to make, but it is the only way for us to come back. The newspaper has struggled long before today, but these circumstances finally prove it impossible for us to continue right now. We fully intend to return to normal operations as soon as we can, and we are discussing other ways to continue some sort of presence in the community while we navigate a world without deadlines. This is something I haven’t experienced in all eight years at this newspaper. In fact, the newspaper has rarely, in fact never, ceased to arrive in mailboxes. Your support and readership are the reason we’ve printed this newspaper for 58 years- and your support over the coming weeks will be the reason we return. We will do our best, and while things may be crumbling right now, I will keep you updated about what we plan to do as circumstances unfold. Please check out the next two editions for more information and as much local content as I can possibly squeeze in.

Please stay safe, well, and be kind to others. We will make it through this period of struggle together. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sincerely,
Kaley Evans
Editor, The Haskell News"

HPS Meal update:

03/25/2020

A few quick notes from the Editor:

1) Things are crazy right now, and I am committed to doing everything I can for our local restaurants. Look for our β€œeat local” page in this week’s edition! I called around town and have information from all of our local eateries. Let’s support them! They need us!

2) Newspapers fall under essential operations during this time of uncertainty. I’ve chosen not to take this lightly; I’ll be working remote, but I’ll be working hard to do what I can to make things easier, celebrate the wins, and get information out to all of you. Entertain. Support. Inform.

3) We are working remote and will be nearly fully remote likely by next week. We are limiting traffic and exposure to areas of the office that your newspapers pass through during the shipping process. During this time, e-mail us! Reach out at [email protected]. I’m working on transferring our phone number to my remote office in the meantime. Messages are still being checked!

4) Seniors- my heart goes out to you. I know this isn’t the end you expected. I’m going to come up with something special for the class of 2020. Something a little beyond what we’ve done before. Stay tuned.

5) Send in your quarantine pictures! We want to document this time in history. Our newspaper is preserved at the Oklahoma Historical Society. This time in history matters!

6) Stay home as much as you can. Wash your hands. Be kind.

-Kaley

BREAKING:
Governor Stitt announced new orders related to COVID-19 this afternoon at a press conference that will affect Haskell.

Beginning tomorrow evening at 11:59 PM, all non-essential businesses are ordered to be closed for a period of 21 days in counties with a positive case of COVID-19. This includes both Wagoner and Muskogee Counties.

Essential businesses are ones that the public rely on in their day-to-day life. This includes banks, hospitals, supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations, post offices, and the like. They carry supplies necessary for survival, both in the long and short-term. In contrast, non-essential businesses are those that people frequent for pleasure, like gyms, bars, restaurants, movie theaters, museums, and concert halls, etc.

Governor Stitt indicated during the press conference that he will likely follow the Whitehouse standard for what is considered essential vs non-essential. Restaurants are encouraged to continue business by offering curbside/delivery/drive-thru services.

We will add more info as it is available.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are practicing social distancing by working remotely, and keeping our door locked when we are physically in the office. We are both around people considered in the "high risk" category related to COVID-19, and a large portion of subscribers are elderly. We will be doing this until further notice.

We are still checking the mail and our dropbox to the left of our door, as of now. If you have questions, e-mail [email protected] for faster responses. You can also call and leave a message- but expect delayed communication as we are reducing trips out of our homes.

Thank you!
