HUSKERS> The Nebraska volleyball team has been picked by the leagues coaches to win the Big 10 Conference Volleyball Championship this year. The Huskers won their fifth Big 10 title in 2024 with a 19-1 conference record to share the crown with Penn State. Nebraska finished the season 33-3 and reached the NCAA Semifinals. Penn State was second in the preseason poll, followed by Wisconsin, Minnesota and UCLA.
Four Nebraska players were included on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. They include Andi Jackson, Harper Murray, Bergen Reilly and Rebekah Allick.
The Nebraska men's basketball team has received a commitment from a 6-foot-8 forward from Waukee, Iowa. Colin Rice chose Nebraska over offers from Iowa, Illinois and Northwestern. Last season at Waukee Northwest, Rice averaged 12.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while shooting 53.6% from the field and 37.8% from three-point territory.
LEGION BASEBALL> Class B and Class C seniors American Legion Baseball Tournaments get underway today. The Class B tournaments will be held in Nebraska City, Springfield, Blair, York, Wayne, Broken Bow and Alliance. The Class C Tournaments will be in Orchard, Wisner, Tecumseh, Wymore, Albion, St Paul and Valentine.
Hastings Five Points Bank begins play in the American Division of the Seniors Class A State Tournament tomorrow at Papillion LaVista South. The Chiefs will play Omaha Westview in the opening round at 4:00pm. We'll have the game on X-Stream Sports beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45pm. In the other games, Bellevue West will play Millard South at 10:00am followed by Fremont against Gretna East at 1:00pm and Papillion LaVista South against Lincoln Southwest at 7:00pm.
In the National Division at Ryder Park in Grand Island, Elkhorn North will play Papillion at 10:00am followed by Lincoln North Star against Bennington at 1:00pm, Lincoln East against Omaha Creighton Prep at 4:00pm and Grand Island Home Federal against Kearney Misko's at 7:00pm.
The Class A Juniors State Tournament will get underway tomorrow at Omaha Creighton Prep. At 10:00am, its Millard North against Bennington followed by Lincoln North Star against Millard South at 1:00pm, Papillion against Lincoln East at 4:00pm and Omaha Creighton Prep against Kearney Misko's at 7:00pm.
SODBUSTERS> The Hastings Sodbusters split a pair of games with the Nebraska Prospects yesterday at Duncan Field. The Sodbusters lost the first game 3-1 but won the nightcap 8-6. The same two team will play at 6:35pm tonight. It'll be the final home game of the season for the Sodbusters.
ROYALS> The Kansas City Royals will open a weekend series with the Cleveland Indians tonight at Kauffman Stadium. First pitch will be at 7:10pm.
