"In reality, DEI is demeaning to everyone: the bypassed, the whistleblowers, and the seeming beneficiaries. It is a socially engineered scam created by guilt-ridden intellectuals that is exploitative even of those who seemingly win from its emoluments."

This Fourth of July, Conlin + Howard Publishers proudly celebrates the freedom, courage, and enduring spirit of America. We wish you and your family a safe, joyful, and memorable Independence Day.

Fifty years ago, I (Photo Below Left) was a First Lieutenant serving with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines Expeditionary Force aboard the USS Nashville. The photograph was taken during amphibious operations and training exercises on Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, with the Atlantic Ocean stretching behind us.

The Marine in the center is First Lieutenant Lee Farmer. A few months later, on September 11, 1976, he stood beside me as best man when Kate and I were married.

From July 3 through July 8, 1976, duty took us north to take part in the International Naval Review during America’s Bicentennial celebration in New York City. President Gerald Ford landed via helicopter aboard the Nashville for an inspection—an unforgettable moment in an unforgettable year.

Half a century has passed, but the memories remain vivid: My Fellow Marines, the Navy warships, the magnificent ocean, the sense of duty, and the pride of serving our country.

Semper Fi and God bless America.

Practicing "respectful disagreement" is a good principle. What if interlocutors choose to apply force for their position and deny you to present your ideas? An obvious problem on campuses.

Religious colleges are holding themselves up as models of respectful political disagreement in the Trump era, as they met this week to promote their speech codes as moralizing influences on students.

At State University, “publish or perish” is no longer a figure of speech.

When Professor Scott McKay exposes favoritism, financial misconduct, and corruption at the highest levels of the university, administrators close ranks. His questions become accusations. His colleagues become conspirators. And someone decides the only effective response is to silence him permanently.

Choking Dead Chickens is a wickedly funny academic thriller about ambition, hypocrisy, and the dangerous absurdity of higher education.

Higher education has never been more absurd—or more dangerous.

Noel Polk (Mississippi State University), noted Faulkner scholar, offered his take on an early version of Choking Dead Chickens: "Marc, I retrieved your manuscript from the office about 2 today, brought it home and sat down to skim a few pages to see what was up. 3 hours later, I turned the l...

Are AACSB and University Administrators Trustworthy, Miscreant Authorities, or Just Plain Dumb?

Chauncey M. DePree, Jr.

What if the experts are wrong?

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business—AACSB—is widely regarded as the premier accrediting organization for business schools. Universities vigorously pursue its approval. Administrators proudly celebrate its recognition. Students and parents are encouraged to regard AACSB accreditation as evidence of educational quality.

But does the reality of accreditation justify that confidence?
Drawing upon decades of experience in higher education, research, and professional scholarship, Chauncey M. DePree, Jr. examines AACSB’s claims, practices, and influence. He considers whether its accreditation process delivers the rigor, accountability, and educational benefits it promises—or whether prestige and institutional self-interest have been mistaken for proof of quality.

The consequences extend far beyond university administrators.

Accreditation affects students, parents, faculty members, employers, taxpayers, and the institutions that devote enormous amounts of time and money to obtaining and maintaining accredited status. Yet much of the evaluation process remains beyond meaningful public scrutiny.

Provocative, meticulously argued, and often surprising, this book asks questions that universities and accrediting authorities may prefer to avoid:

What does AACSB accreditation actually accomplish?

Do its benefits justify its costs?

And should the public continue to trust a system it is rarely permitted to examine?

The evidence is presented. The explanations are tested. The final judgment belongs to the reader.

Business-school accreditation is widely assumed to be rigorous, objective, and beneficial. But what if those assumptions deserve closer examination? investigates the claims, practices, and consequences of AACSB accreditation. Drawing on research, analysis, and firsthand knowledge of higher edu...

.More Cash Is Better Than Less

Selecting the Most Profitable Mutual Funds for 401(k), 403(b), IRA, and Other Investors

Chauncey M. DePree, Jr. and Rebecca K. Jude

Percentages are useful—but dollars are what investors get to keep.

Investors are surrounded by ratings, rankings, expense ratios, performance percentages, and an endless assortment of financial statistics. Yet those numbers often fail to answer the question that matters most:

Which mutual funds will leave me with more money?

More Cash Is Better Than Less teaches one practical skill: how to evaluate and compare mutual funds based on their ability to generate profits for the investor.

Rather than overwhelming readers with investment theory, predictions, or technical jargon, Chauncey M. DePree, Jr. and Rebecca K. Jude show how to translate commonly reported fund ratios into meaningful dollars and cents. Their step-by-step method helps investors see more clearly how returns, expenses, and other financial measures affect the money they actually keep.

The book grew from a real-world problem. Participants in a 401(k) and profit-sharing plan—ranging from high-school graduates to attorneys, accountants, and computer engineers—were offered numerous mutual funds but little practical guidance for choosing among them. They needed a process they could understand and use for themselves.

Clear explanations and accompanying interactive spreadsheets allow readers to apply the calculations directly to their own investment choices.

Whether you are managing a 401(k), 403(b), IRA, college-savings account, or personal investment portfolio, More Cash Is Better Than Less provides a straightforward, repeatable method for making better-informed mutual fund decisions.

Investors are often overwhelmed by statistics, ratings, and financial jargon. This book focuses on a single objective: identifying mutual funds with superior profit potential. Through clear explanations and practical examples, the authors demonstrate how to convert commonly reported investment ra...
