The Center for Writers

The Center for Writers The Center for Writers is the creative writing program at the University of Southern Mississippi Between 35 and 40 students work toward M.A. and Ph.D.

degrees in English with emphases in fiction or poetry, and each student completes a creative thesis or dissertation to fulfill requirements for the degree. The tone of the program is serious but informal, with workshops offered in fiction, non-fiction, prose, and poetry by the program's distinguished faculty. Additional courses in craft, literary forms, and teaching creative writing are also offer

ed regularly, and students participate in a regular reading series and in the publication of a student journal, Product. The department is also home to the Mississippi Review, a nationally recognized literary magazine. Students and graduates have won the Whiting Award, the Henfield Prize, the Flannery O'Connor Award and National Endowment fellowships and published books with Counterpoint, William Morrow, St. Martins, Ticknor and Fields, Georgia, Red Hen, Faber & Faber, Atlantic Monthly Press, Prentice Hall, Sarabande, and a number of other first rank presses.

Come see us at Mississippi Book Festival this Saturday in Jackson!

Mississippi Review/Center for Writers will have a table inside the Capitol Building.

Dr. Olivia Clare Friedman will be on a poetry panel at 10:45 AM in State Capitol 4th Floor House Corridor. She will also be doing a book signing of her book of poems at 12:15 PM at the Book Signing Tent.

Dr. J.A. Bernstein will be moderating a panel, "Iran Unveiled," at 1:30 PM in the State Capitol.

Center for Writers Students will be leading a writing workshop, free and open to the public, at 1:30 PM in State Capitol Room 202.

The Capitol’s stately rooms and nearby Galloway Church turn into venues for distinguished panelists, the streets in-between transform into a bustling marketplace for booksellers, and the grounds and Capitol Rotunda become a hub of lively exchange.
