Penn State Abington was not always its own campus. There was a time it was tied close to University Park, and every decision had to fit that mold. Then came a shift toward more independence, and it changed what Abington could become.

One example: the PSS major. It only exists at Abington. It may never have gotten approved if the campus was still under the same direct control.

Walk through the Sutherland Building, in this stop on the AR Goes tour. Every building on this campus has a story like this one, you just have to know where to look.

Before Penn State Abington, this land in Abington PA held the Ogontz School, one of the first schools built just for women.

Most girls back then learned at home. Ogontz was different. It had real teachers, full classes, and helped women build careers, especially in teaching. Schools like it helped raise female literacy and opened the door to college for women everywhere.

You can still see pieces of that story on the Penn State Abington campus in Montgomery County: old stone buildings, an archive room full of uniforms and records, and now a cougar statue where the school once stood.

History does not always look like it once did. But it is still here if you look, right in the Philadelphia suburbs.

University City High School opened in 1972 at 36th and Lancaster Ave in West Philadelphia. For 40 years, it was a public high school where the neighborhood could come and learn. It closed in 2013. By 2015, it was gone.

That's exactly why this story matters.

Annette Deigh of shares what the school meant to her community and why she thinks people need to remember it, even now that it no longer exists. Because University City has changed a lot, and knowing where it came from is part of understanding where it's going.

The things historians will care about in 150 years aren't the fancy stuff. It's the folding tables. The folding chairs. The everyday items we toss without a second thought.

A woman came in last Christmas and ordered a rum ring. Then she started crying.

It was her first Christmas without her grandmother, and grandma always brought a rum ring.

That's what food does. It holds people. It keeps them close even when they're gone.
