Actress Meg Ryan paid tribute to Rob and Michele Reiner, writing on Instagram, "Oh how we will miss this man... “Thank you for flying with us! See you next time,” Emma said with her usual warm smile as the final passenger stepped off the plane.

It had been one of those rare flights — quiet, smooth, no drama, no emergencies. The kind flight attendants secretly pray for.

As she began her post-flight routine, picking up napkins and checking seat pockets, a faint sound made her pause.

A tiny, soft mewing noise. Almost like… a kitten?

Emma frowned and followed the sound toward the very last row.
When she reached the aisle, she froze.

A baby.
A tiny, bundled baby lying alone on the seat.

Her heart dropped. “Oh my God… someone must be frantic right now.”

She rushed forward — but then she saw it.

A folded note tucked beside the infant.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Inside, written in shaky handwriting, was a message that made her breath catch:

“Please don’t try to find me. I can’t give him the life he deserves.
If you find him, take him in as your own.
Please name him Matthew.
And… please forgive me.”

Emma stared at the child — at Matthew — her pulse racing.

My Stepdaughter Crocheted 80 Hats for Sick Children — My MIL Threw Them in the Trash. My Husband’s “Surprise” for Her Left Her Speechless.

I have a 10-year-old daughter, Emma, from my first marriage. Her dad passed when she was three, so it was just the two of us for years.
When I married Daniel, he embraced Emma with his whole heart.

His mother, Carol?
The complete opposite.

Carol never missed a chance to remind us Emma “isn’t real family,” saying things like:

“It’s cute you play favorites.”
“Stepchildren aren’t the same.”

But Emma is the gentlest soul you’ll ever meet.
For Christmas, she decided to crochet 80 hats for children in hospice care — using her own allowance for yarn.

I was so proud.

Two weeks later, Daniel left for a business trip. Whenever he’s gone, Carol “checks on us,” which really means checking what she can criticize.

Emma and I returned from the store that day, and she ran to her room to admire her finished hats.

Five seconds later, a scream.

💥 Her bed was empty.
ALL 80 donation bags were gone.

Emma collapsed on the floor sobbing.

Carol stood in the doorway, arms crossed:

“I threw them out. Total waste of time. Why spend money on strangers?”

“You threw away eighty hats for sick kids?” I whispered.

“They were ugly,” she shrugged. “Stop encouraging useless hobbies.”

Emma whispered, through tears, “They weren’t useless…”

That night my daughter cried herself to sleep.

But Carol didn’t know what was coming.

When Daniel returned, I told him everything. His face went cold — a quiet, dangerous anger.

He called his mother, voice perfectly calm:

“Hi Mom. I’m home. Come over.
We have a surprise for you.”

I wish I had better news.
While things can be better for 5-year-old Oaklee Slaton of Albertville, AL, she’s still smiling.
5 years after she received a new heart.
Weeks after her body decided it would reject the heart she received in 2020.
Oaklee was born on July 20, 2020.
She was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a potentially deadly condition that occurs when the heart is not fully developed.
“Oaklee had open heart surgery 3 days after she was born,” Oaklee’s mom Alexis told me.
Oakley fought hard- at the age off 33 days, an ECMO machine kept her alive.
It was clear Oaklee needed a new heart.
Oaklee received that heart 5 months after she was born.
The date was December 12th, 2020.
Oaklee Slaton grew into a beautiful, creative young child.
Her parents Trent and Alexis watched Oaklee grasp life.
Until last December, years after Oaklee received her new heart.
I checked in with Alexis last night, and the news could have been better.
“We’re still in rejection,” she said.
“We hope to have a heart cath in a few weeks and get more answers.”
Until then, Oaklee will continue to do her thing.
She will love Moana and anything Disney.
She will love music and dance and singer Brandon Lake.
And she will love her baby brother Carson and her parents Trent and Alexis.
Let’s send our best to Oaklee.
Let’s pray she pulls through.
Let’s root for the 5-year-old from Albertville. 🙏
