I didn’t know it then.
But every Sunday, she was planting something in me.

My mawmaw knocked on my bedroom door as the sun woke up.
Already dressed.
Floral Sunday dress.
Purse tucked under her arm like it mattered.

I didn’t always want to go.
I was a little boy.
I wanted cartoons.
Pancakes.
To stay home.

She took me anyway.

We walked toward that little white church.
Slow.
Her hand steady.
Mine swinging.

She never rushed.
Never complained.
She just showed up.
Every single Sunday.

She didn’t preach at me much at home.
Instead, She lived it.
And that was preaching enough.

She saw something in me.
Something worth protecting.
Something worth shaping early.

Church wasn’t just a building to her.
It was a foundation.
A compass.
A reminder of who you are when life gets loud.

I didn’t always understand the sermons.
But I remember the hymns.
The wooden pews.
Her hand squeezing mine during prayer.

Looking back now, I see it.

She took me to church
long before I knew I’d need it.

According to a lifelong study performed by firstborns,
second born children are the leading cause of chaos
in the home—and possibly society.

Firstborn children were raised on rules, routines, and responsibility.
Secondborns were raised on hand-me-downs and “just let it go.”

They don’t test limits.
They ignore them.

They climb higher, talk louder, and laugh longer.
They weren’t given structure—
they inherited survival skills.

They don’t ask, “Is this allowed?”
they ask, “What happens if I do it anyway?”

Final conclusion from the research:
Second borns didn’t break the system.
They just found the weaknesses in it.

And somehow…
they’re still everyone’s favorite.

They barely reach the altar.
Knees tucked under them.
Hands folded the way someone once showed them.

They don’t know the big words yet.

They don’t know how to explain fear, gratitude, or why grown-ups sometimes cry in church.

At first, prayer is simple.
Thank you for today.
Help my mom.
Please keep me safe.

Prayer is learned like walking—
by watching,
by stumbling,
and by being gently guided back up.

A habit being formed long before life gets heavy.

When joy comes, they’ll know where to take it.
When heartbreak shows up uninvited,
they’ll already know where to kneel—
at an altar, a bedside, or the front seat of a truck.

As the years pass, the prayers change.
They get longer.
They get harder.
Sometimes they feel unanswered.

But the foundation was laid early:
when words fail, you are not alone.

Teaching a child to pray
isn’t just about faith—
it’s about resilience.

That no matter how loud the world gets,
there is a place to be still…
and a God who is always listening.

As light fades towards the end of the day, a little boy stands barefoot.

At the edge of the of dusty road he stands, staring, waiting.

His face lights up, arms extend, emotion shines through while he points down the road with excitement only a child can have.

He doesn’t say much-he doesn’t need to.
“That’s my dad!”

Down the road is a tired man in work boots and worn shirt, the kind of clothes that tell stories without ever speaking.
His shoulders carry the weight of long hours, sacrifice, and responsibility.

When he looks up and sees that small figure waiting on him,
Something changes.
The road feels shorter.
The day feels lighter.

That boy doesn’t know what the job was like today. He doesn’t know about deadlines, bills, or sore hands. He just knows his dad is home.

And to him, that’s everything.

A few steps closer, the man stops, points back at the boy, and grins wide enough to erase the whole day.

“That’s my boy.”
