Wisdom Wednesday!!!

I’ve been working on our back porch, and it reminded me of something simple: anything you want to last has to have a strong foundation!!!

Your marriage, your family, your career, and especially your faith—storms are gonna come. The question isn’t whether the storm comes, it’s what are you built on when it does?

I remember when I was a kid, around Christmas time it seemed like we always ended up watching Dolly Parton’s Christmas Movies and the song Coat of Many Colors comes to mind. It’s one of those memories that has stuck with me.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized life is a lot like that coat.

If you could take little pieces from every season of your life and sew them together, you’d have your own coat of many colors. There would be pieces from the good times, the hard times, the victories, the failures, the heartbreaks, the lessons and the blessings.

Because you’re not the same person you were 5 years ago.
You’re not the same person you were 10 years ago.
You’re definitely not the same person you were 20 or 30 years ago.

Life changes you.

And if you’re married, you better learn how to change together.

You have to keep learning your spouse. The person you married years ago isn’t exactly the same person standing beside you today—and neither are you. Don’t fight every change. Accept it. Learn from it. Grow through it. And most importantly, grow together.

We hear so many couples later in life say, “We just grew apart.”

Sometimes I wonder if they really grew apart, or if somewhere along the way they stopped growing together.

Sometimes a marriage becomes completely centered around raising the kids. Ball games, school, work, bills, practices and everything else take over. Mom becomes “Mom.” Dad becomes “Dad.” And somewhere in the middle of taking care of everybody else, husband and wife forget to take care of each other.

That’s not the way it’s supposed to be.

As hard as it can be for us as parents to understand, your spouse comes before your children. Your children are a blessing from God, but Scripture tells us there comes a day when they are supposed to leave father and mother. Eventually the house gets quiet again, and the person sitting beside you is the one you promised forever to.

So protect that relationship now.

Keep dating each other.
Keep talking.
Keep laughing.
Keep praying together.
Keep learning each other.
Keep choosing each other.

And when another piece gets added to your coat, don’t be afraid because it’s a different color than the one before it. That’s life. That’s growth. That’s marriage.

Today, Dolly Parton passed away at 80 years old. I couldn’t help but think back to that childhood memory and realize that something I watched as a kid means something completely different to me as a grown man.

Maybe that’s another piece of my own coat.

Rest in peace, Dolly. Thank you for the memories, the music, and for reminding generations of us that even the scraps and pieces of life can be sewn together into something beautiful.

As you’re watching the show, I want everyone to remember something: this is real life.

It’s real life for law enforcement, it’s real life for the suspects, and there are real-life consequences to every action and every decision. I know it’s also a wonderful source of entertainment—I love watching law enforcement too! But there are always things happening in those moments that may not get shown or explained on TV.

As a supervisor, I will always trust my guys’ instincts, training, and knowledge. We do us. Our number one goal is for everybody to go home safe.

After a busy weekend and a late, late night, I was blessed with the opportunity to wake up again this morning—and I was reminded that His mercies were renewed once again.

“They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:23 KJV

As I drove to church this morning, I thanked the good Lord for keeping everyone safe this weekend. And when I say everyone, I mean everyone—even the “bad guys,” as Callan likes to call them. 😂

I also prayed, “Lord, give me something to help me get through this week ahead.”

About 31 minutes into church this morning, the men came up and sang “Victory in Jesus.”

Man…that was it.

Sometimes we’re looking for one big victory when we need to start thanking God for the small victories every single day. Waking up. Making it home. Keeping everyone safe. Another opportunity to be a better husband, father, leader, friend, and Christian than I was yesterday.

Brother Fred has been preaching for several weeks about becoming a better husband, and it has been a great lesson for me. My wife is my crown of jewels, and she deserves the best version of me—not just when it’s easy, but every single day. I don’t have it all figured out, but I’m going to keep trying to be a better husband, father, leader, friend, and Christian.

This week, I’m going to remind myself:

There is Victory in Jesus—even in the small victories.

Thank you, Lord, for another morning, renewed mercies, another chance to get it right, and for keeping us all safe.

Great is Thy faithfulness. 🙏
