SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE — METEOROLOGICAL DISCUSSION

A potentially active severe weather night remains on the table as we head into the late afternoon and evening hours. The anticipated warm front is continuing a slow northward progression, and as it lifts, we will see dew points rise and instability gradually increase. However, even at this lead time, there is still meaningful uncertainty regarding where the warm front ultimately stalls, and that placement will heavily influence both storm intensity and storm mode.
Multiple mesoscale processes are interacting across the region. Instability is not particularly high for June, but we are dealing with an unseasonably strong low‑pressure system to our northwest—more typical of a November setup—which is producing robust wind fields throughout the column. This juxtaposition of June thermodynamics and cold‑season kinematics is what makes this a uniquely volatile environment.
A 65+ kt low‑level jet is already being sampled and may strengthen further. This will support rapid storm organization, upscale growth into clusters, and the potential for embedded rotation within any maturing line segments.
Due to the uncertainty in warm‑front placement, the previously outlined 60–80% severe risk zone has been removed. Some guidance suggests the front may stall near the lakeshore, which would introduce a flash‑flooding concern as storms repeatedly track along the boundary. This same zone would also carry a secondary tornado threat, especially if any storms can remain surface‑based near the front.
Timing has been expanded to 5 PM–4 AM, with the potential for multiple rounds of storms. Given the prolific shear environment, any storm within these rounds could become severe, and a tornado or two remains possible.
One notable update:
There is increasing indication that the system may not evolve into a fully bowed‑out segment.
*Positive: Reduced likelihood of widespread 80 mph destructive winds (more in the 60–70 mph range).
*Negative: A less linear mode increases the chance for more discrete or semi‑discrete cells, which would carry a higher tornado potential.
Overall, the environment remains highly supportive of damaging storms, even with modest instability, due to the strength of the wind fields. The next several hours will be critical as we monitor how the warm front and ongoing convection evolve.
