No need to adjust your glasses—this is 's Glitch in the Matrix quilt! The negative space in the background forces the eye to quickly jump from one purple shape to another, creating an optical illusion.

When we went to Disneyland last month I went into a deep dive after going on It's a Small World and discovering the work of Mary Blair - I realized she is probably one of my fairy art mothers so I will probably name this one after her :)

The terra cotta might look familiar because those are the scraps from the Burnside Bibs I made recently. The lovely chambray, striped linen, and black windowpane fabrics are from a box of precious Conscious Clothing scraps that I had been saving.

I wanted to do a calmer piece with more negative space and I'm loving how it turned out! I may have to play with sparser layouts more in the future. Now to decide whether to frame it or leave it as is...

NIXED!
I was all set to enter The X Factor into the Modern X exhibit at QuiltCon 2023 to celebrate the MQG’s 10th anniversary. Then I realised it is not eligible as it was made before 2020. But here it is anyway. Cross-stitch all the way. ❤️

"Balancing Act" finish - this quilt evolved from a technique learned in a by Joe Cunningham and his guest Mike McNamara.

It was lots of fun creating the wonkiness! I was torn between calling it "Jenga" or "Balancing Act" but my granddaughter liked Balancing Act best so there it is!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My inspiration fabric on the back feels kind of Fall-ish so it felt fitting to combine these fabrics one by one for an October make.

It may not look like it, but this quilt was a bit of a departure for me. All of the parts are appliquéd to a foundation piece. I sometimes use that technique on smaller pieces, but not a quilt of this size. Like I said before, this quilt wasn’t as enjoyable to quilt as I had hoped. The tight weave of the painted pieces combined with too many layers in some spots was a challenge. In the end it turned out fine and it feels really nice. ⁣

The foundation is a pillowcase I picked up at a thrift store many years ago. It was the rows of scalloped stitches along the edge that caught my eye. I made sure to keep that part 💙. The fringy bits are the selvedge of the reddish orange fabric used here and there. ⁣

I’m happy to be done with this quilt and I’ve already moved on to the next. I seem to now be in a ‘whole cloth foundation appliqué piecing of thrift store finds’ mode, got it? 😂⁣
