As an author, there are a few things you should keep in mind when hiring an editor.
First, copyediting is just that - fixing grammar, punctuation, and spelling. It’s not about adding content or rewording your entire manuscript. Please don’t hire an editor for a copyedit and then be upset when they don’t rewrite your story! A quick chat beforehand about expectations can save a lot of frustration for both of you.
Second, if you hire an editor for a developmental edit, be prepared for bigger changes. Your editor might suggest adjustments they feel are necessary to make the story stronger and keep readers engaged.
I recently had a situation where an author hired me for developmental editing and then got upset because I made changes. They didn’t want any changes at all! 😅 That’s why setting expectations upfront is so important - it keeps everyone happy and avoids surprises down the road.
