Breaking: In response to 3 events of violence within 11 hours including one resident being shot and airlifted to UAMS Trauma Center overnight. City of Elaine passes ordinance enforcing 30 day curfew 10pm-5am. Police department also mentioned more patrol support from County and State law enforcement.

After more than four and a half hours of meetings Wednesday evening, the Barton School Board voted 4-2 to name Megan Guthrie as interim superintendent for the 2026-27 school year.

The Barton School Board entered executive session at 5:03 p.m. Wednesday to begin interviews for the district’s interim superintendent position.

After several lengthy meetings in recent months, the Phillips County Quorum Court wrapped up business relatively quickly Tuesday night.

The court honored the Central High School Boys Track & Field Team for its 2026 Class 3A State Championship. The resolution was sponsored by Justices Martin Rawls and Betty Brimley.

Justices also approved county bills and received an update on courthouse HVAC repairs.

At its regularly scheduled meeting Monday night, the Barton School Board voted to accept the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Bruce Guthrie.

The vote came shortly after 9 p.m. following Guthrie’s acceptance of the superintendent position at Lonoke School District.

The meeting adjourned shortly after 10 p.m. with no further action taken. The board is scheduled to meet again Wednesday night.

The Helena-West Helena City Council will hold a special meeting this afternoon to consider two items previously tabled Tuesday night.

The meeting comes after aldermen delayed action earlier this week, citing concerns about financial reporting and spending transparency.
