When hockey disappeared from Amarillo after nearly three decades, the community lost more than a sport — they lost a piece of themselves. In this episode of Home Ice, Vertec BPN travels to the Texas Panhandle to uncover how one family, one vision, and one determined city rallied to bring the game back.
We follow Austin Sutter, whose mission to restore full‑time ice in Amarillo sparked a movement that transformed an old auction pavilion into the Amarillo Ice Ranch — a thriving hub for youth hockey, families, and the newly returned NAHL team. Along the way, we hear from the people whose lives have been reshaped by this rink: a former pro golfer turned rink GM, a former coach working behind the scenes to help the next generation of players, and the Sutters themselves, who refused to give up even when the odds stacked high.
From community grit to unexpected twists, this is the story of how Amarillo reclaimed its hockey heartbeat — and built a home ice that will shape generations to come.
