As the federal government shutdown moves into its second week, Congressman Troy Downing told MTN he believes pressure is going to build on Congress to move forward a "clean" continuing resolution that would restore funding for a few weeks.

A new state law is increasing the penalties for some drivers who flee from law enforcement.

House Bill 503 will up the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony if the person has been previously convicted of fleeing or if they cause extensive property damage or serious bodily injury or death to another person.

There’s a growing list of constitutional amendments trying to get onto Montana’s 2026 ballot -- including one trying to revise the ballot measure process itself.

Meanwhile, sponsors of a proposed amendment to maintain nonpartisan judicial elections are going to court, claiming the Attorney General's office improperly changed their ballot statement.

The doors were locked at the Glacier National Park Headquarters in West Glacier on Wednesday, as the first day of the federal government shutdown impacted park operations.

While visitors and vehicles were allowed in the West Glacier entrance, nobody was manning the check-in stations to take entry fees.

As Congress again failed to reach agreement on a budget deal Tuesday, it appears the federal government is headed for a shutdown.

Jonathon Ambarian went through federal agencies' contingency plans to break down what impacts the public could see in Montana: Transportation Security Administration - TSA, federal law enforcement and US Border Patrol will continue working, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service could reduce services, Social Security Administration and Montana VA Health Care System promise to continue providing benefits.

Earlier this month, Governor Greg Gianforte announced a new task force to focus on the growing demand for energy in Montana. It held its first meeting Monday in Helena.

Montana Department of Environmental Quality director Sonja Nowakowski, the task force's chair, says Montana has seen more electrical generation capacity come online since 2019, but the actual amount of energy the state produces hasn’t increased.

On Friday, pre-kindergarten classes at Morning Star Elementary School in Bozeman went through their normal morning routines, but they had some high-profile guests: Governor Greg Gianforte and U.S. Education Secretary Secretary Linda McMahon.

McMahon plans to visit all 50 states as part of a “Returning Education to the States” tour. It comes as she seeks to implement President Donald Trump's proposal to downsize and eventually eliminate the U.S. Department of Education.
