A wide-ranging group of plaintiffs is suing the state and Montana DNRC over exempt wells. They argue that the cumulative effects of these wells – relatively small water users that don’t need to go through the full process of securing a groundwater permit – are harming long-time water rights holders.

From Jonathon Ambarian:

Earlier this month, MTN reported on changes in how Montana is handling water rights for developments that use “exempt wells.” Now, a new lawsuit is challenging the use of exempt wells altogether.

Across Montana, homeowners are starting to see the first evidence of the changes lawmakers made to property taxes earlier this year.

The latest tax bills reflect new graduated rates for 2025: if a property is worth more, its tax rate will be higher. But these rates are only temporary, with new "homestead" rates taking effect next year.
