House votes to end government shutdown

The United States House of Representatives returned to Washington, DC today to take up the measure passed by the US Senate to end the longest government shutdown in history.

The Republicans in the House used their slight majority to pass the legislation by a vote of 222-209. The bill does not include an extension of the ACA Healthcare subsidies sought by the Democratic party. However, legislation does include a process for a vote on the subsidies in December.

Since the version passed by the House of Representatives did not change any of the provisions of the Senate legislation the bill can proceed straight to the President’s desk for his signature.

The legislation is now headed to President Trump’s desk. President Trump is expected to sign the legislation ending the 43-day shutdown of the US Government. This legislation included a full year funding bills for Health and Human Services, Department of Agriculture, and the Legislative Branch.

Congress will have to take up funding bills again in January to completely fund the government for the remaining departments not covered in this continuing resolution.

Although this would provide funding for all departments at the 2025 level, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced flight reductions will stay at the 6% level and would not increase to 10% that was slated to begin at the end of the week.

The FAA will evaluate safety issues and the return of traffic controllers to determine when flight levels will return to normal levels. No official word if the reduction will still be in effect during the Thanksgiving holiday travel season.

Today, around noon, an suspicious person was noticed in the parking lot at Clark High School. The person was approached by NISD police and the individual fled causing Administration to place the campus on lockdown. The lockdown did end without any threat to the students at Clark High School.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your patience, support, and understanding as our campus navigated a challenging situation today involving a potential threat to our school.
At approximately noon, our campus received a report of a suspicious individual in the Clark High School parking lot with a possible weapon. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the immediate safety of our students and staff, our campus was placed into a secure status while the NISD Police Department investigated the report.
An individual matching the description was confronted by NISD Police and attempted to flee the scene. This led to a brief pursuit, and as a precautionary measure, both Clark High School and Locke Hill Elementary were placed into a full Lockdown. The individual was apprehended by NISD Police shortly after.
We want to clearly state the following facts:
No weapon was found on the individual or anywhere on our campus.
No shots were fired by police, despite any rumors you may have heard.
This incident is a sobering reminder of the importance of having well-rehearsed safety protocols. I am incredibly proud of our students and staff for their prompt and responsive actions in following all safety procedures during this stressful time. Their cooperation was critical in allowing law enforcement to manage the situation effectively.
The safety and security of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We take our obligation to maintain a safe learning environment very seriously.
We are currently debriefing today’s events with the NISD Police Department and district officials to review our procedures. We appreciate your continued support and trust as we work together to ensure our school remains a safe and secure place for everyone.
If your student needs to speak with a counselor regarding today's events, please do not hesitate to contact our counseling office.

Over 60 years ago, Lucy Brown started The Echo to share her opinions and thoughts regarding local events and politics. From this humble beginning, a community paper entertained, informed, and educated residents from Grey Forest, Helotes, and Leon Valley.

The Echo continues to reach those readers but has grown to reach readers throughout the Northside of Bexar County.

As communities and methods of sharing news have evolved so has the Echo. Now we provide video, audio, photojournalism, and writing to inform our audiences about the information important to them.
