To all the women who provide a motherly influence, Happy Mother’s Day!

Did you know? Mary Towles Sasseen, principal of the primary department at Center Street School in Henderson, Kentucky, first observed Mother's Day on April 20, 1887, in honor of her mother's birthday. She advocated for a national holiday. In 1893, she published a "how to" booklet outlining a Mother's Day program for schools.

Sasseen continued to promote Mother's Day until her unexpected passing during childbirth in 1906. Because of Mary’s early advocacy and a later campaign by Anna Jarvis, President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, declared Mother's Day to be the second Sunday in May.
