A few weeks ago these were all mealworms. Now we’re officially seeing pupae and our first darkling beetles. That means the colony is starting its full life cycle and soon we’ll have home-raised mealworms for the chickens and quail.

It’s funny how exciting a single beetle can be when you’ve been checking drawers every few days. 😂

Still learning as we go, but it’s pretty neat watching the process happen right in front of us.

The lights are coming on, the rabbits are settling in, and Tasso is wrapping up another day of exploring. It’s one of my favorite times on the farm. Everything gets quiet, the air cools down, and for a few minutes you can just enjoy the view.

A lot of work went into this little space, and seeing it like this at the end of the day makes it worth it.

🐔 Well… this escalated quickly.

A few weeks ago we brought home our first Cornish Cross chicks, and let’s just say these birds did not get the memo about growing up slowly. 😳

They’re only a few weeks old and already look like they’ve been hitting the gym, the buffet, and the buffet again. 💪🍽️

We’ve raised plenty of chickens, but these meat birds are a whole different adventure. They eat like tiny feathered vacuum cleaners and somehow produce an equally impressive amount of p**p. 🤣

Every day they’re noticeably bigger than the day before, and watching their growth has been equal parts fascinating, hilarious, and slightly alarming.

We’re learning as we go, and so far the biggest lesson is this:

Never underestimate a Cornish Cross with access to feed.

My daughter came in this weekend for Mother’s Day and we spent part of the weekend 3D printing and painting little Gilmore Girls gazebos for our gardens 🥹💛 🩵

It is a whole tiny Stars Hollow scene with mushrooms, little animals, and succulents everywhere.

Now every time I walk by the planter it makes me smile a little. ☕️🌿
