WEATHER: (July 28, 2025) MONDAY - High yesterday was 99° at 4:00; this morning’s low was 63° at 6:00. KPANcast: Becoming sunny and not as hot today.

LOCAL: Hereford City Commissioners will have a special meeting today at 5:30 in the commission chamber at City Hall. They will discuss an 8-item agenda including the proposed city tax rate for 2025 and the proposed 2025-2026 city budget.

Hereford I.S.D. Board of Trustees will meet today at 6:00 at the Admistation Building to discuss a 13-item agenda.

Funeral services for Melissa Mungia, age 36, will be 11:00 Tuesday at Victory Family Worship. Burial will follow at West Park Cemetery. She was a 2007 graduate of Hereford High School. At the time of her death she was a packaging operator at Panhandle Milling.

Funeral services for Glen Wagner, age 89, will be at 2:00 Tuesday at Vega Methodist Church, burial will follow at Palo Duro Cemetery. He was a longtime area farmer.

Texas DPS officials will be on hand Tuesday for the unveiling ceremony for the Hoof Prints of the American Quarter Horse statue, Tuesday at the DPS District Office in Amarillo. The statue named “Trooper” will symbolize the strength, honor and service of DPS personal.

WEATHER: (July 25, 2025) FRIDAY - High yesterday was 93° at 5:00; this morning’s low was 64° at 6:00. KPANcast: Becoming sunny with a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

LOCAL: Widespread thunderstorm activity produced very heavy rainfall in places Thursday night. The highest Mesonet total was recorded southeast of Amarillo where 2.36 inches of rain fell. Other area totals to note included 2.31 inches on the Palo Duro Canyon floor, 1.41 inches of rain at Umbarger, 1.36 inches at the Hereford Mesonet site, 1.07 at the Bootleg TexMesonet site, .35 inch of rain at The Tree (far western Deaf Smith County), .34 in Friona and .18 of an inch in Dimmitt. KPAN recorded .48 inch of rain at the downtown studios.

A family and friend visitation for Elsie Lloyd, age 93, will be Wednesday from 10:30-11:30 at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home. A private family graveside will take place prior to the visitation. She was a 1949 HHS graduate and a first generation college student who attended West Texas State College. She was a longtime area resident and homemaker. She died on Monday in Hereford.

Graveside services for Carolyn Schumacher, age 67, will be Saturday, August 9th, at 10:00 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery. Carol is remembered as a loving family woman and avid Dallas Cowboys fan. She died on Friday in Amarillo.

Herd Football Camp begins Monday morning and is open to incoming K-9th graders. All campers meet from 9:00-12:00, Monday-Wednesday mornings. Registration is $40 and opens at 8:30 Monday morning at the Whiteface Fieldhouse.

Thunderstorms are beginning to develop along two areas, 1) Northwest New Mexico and 2) southeast Texas Panhandle. Most of the initial activity will occur within these areas over the next few hours, before they begin to spread across the remainder of the area during the evening and overnight hours.

WEATHER: (July 24, 2025) THURSDAY - High yesterday was 92° at 5:00; this morning’s low was 68° at 6:30. KPANcast: Partly cloudy with a high near 92° and a 40% chance of rain this afternoon and evening.

LOCAL: Early Wednesday morning an explosion occurred at Panhandle Milling in Dawn, TX. The Dawn Fire Department received the call-out at 3:31 AM and arrived to a partially collapsed structure and visible fire. Three persons were transported from the scene with burn injuries and one deceased person was extricated from the rubble. Melissa Mungia, age 36, of Hereford, TX, was pronounced deceased on the scene from injuries sustained in the incident. Several area agencies responded throughout the morning.

An emergency response training exercise is taking place this morning that will include HPD, the Deaf Smith County Sheriff’s Office, TxDOT DPS, HRMC, Hereford EMS, Hereford VFD and HISD. The exercise aims to improve local preparedness and collaboration in emergency situations. The public is asked to avoid the area near Hereford High School this morning where the training will take place. Some roads will be blocked beginning at 9:00 and remain blocked until approximately 12:00 today.

Books close this Sunday, July 27th, for ropers interested in competing in next week’s Spicer Gripp Memorial Roping. The annual event will run from July 31st – August 3rd. For registration and spectator info visit spicergripp.com.

WEATHER: (July 23, 2025) WEDNESDAY - High yesterday was 96° at 5:00; this morning’s low was 66° at 6:30. KPANcast: Partly cloudy with a high near 92° and a 20% chance of rain this evening.

LOCAL: KPAN recorded .43 of an inch of rain this morning at the downtown studios. The total included .19 inch of rain from morning showers yesterday with an additional .24 inch falling last night. Shower and storm chances continue through Thursday night.

Kolton Grimsley, of Nazareth, TX, placed 3rd in the Cinch High School National Finals Rodeo over the weekend in tie-down roping. Kolton competed in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and was one of three Texans that took the top spots in the tie-down event.

Cody and Galen Chandler were awarded an Honorary Lone Star Farmer Degree at the Texas FFA convention earlier this month. The award was given for the pairs efforts in the Tri-State Fair and Rodeo Calf Scramble, which is a scholarship opportunity for local youth.

Recent data from ERCOT showed that renewable energy sources were the top producers in the first half of the year for the grid that covers much of the state, excluding the Panhandle area. Wind, solar and storage outpaced legacy energy sources for the first six months and the increase is contributed to large-scale solar installations. Renewables now account for approximately 40% of the grids power, up from 15% a decade ago.

WEATHER: (July 22, 2025) TUESDAY - High yesterday was 100° at 5:00; this morning’s low was 68° at 6:30. KPANcast: Mostly sunny and cooler with increasing rain chances through the afternoon. A 40% chance of rain this evening.

LOCAL: A registered nurse at Hereford Regional Medical Center was recently awarded The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, one of the top recognitions in the country for outstanding nursing care. Alejandra Jimenez was nominated by a new mother for making her delivery experience as easy as possible and continued support during her hospital stay.

The Hereford Independent School District Board of Trustees will meet this afternoon at 5:30 in a special session for a 6-item agenda. Included in the action agenda is the removal of asphalt under the stands at Whiteface Stadium and subsequent replacement. The Board will then move into a training session at 6:00 at the Administration Building Board Room.

A cluster of storms moved over the Hereford area this morning producing brief downpours and a chorus of thunder. Rain chances increase this afternoon and evening with another round slated for tomorrow into Thursday morning as well. A couple of days of cooler temps are in-store before high pressure builds in toward the weekend with temps expected to flirt with the triple digits again.
