LOCAL: The Herd and the Randall Raiders kickoff at 7:00 tonight at Whiteface Stadium in 2-4A football play. Randall and Hereford opened district with a win last week and are sitting at 1-0 in league play. KPAN AM-FM will have live coverage from the stadium at 6:45 with pre-game programs beginning at 5:45.

The Class of 2028 will hold their class supper tonight with a meal of loaded nachos, drink and dessert for $10. The meal is at the HJH cafeteria from 5:00-7:00.

Hereford ISD will hold a Town Hall regarding the Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election on Monday night at 6:00 at the Hereford Civic Center. The public is invited to attend. More information about the ballot measure can be found at herefordisdvatre.com…Early voting begins Monday at the Deaf Smith County Courthouse with voting hours of 8:00-5:00. There are 17 state-wide propositions on the ballot.

Funeral services for Simón Salinas, age 68, are today at 2:00 at San Jose Catholic Church.

LOCAL: The Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program and Texas A&M Forest Service are boosting fire-fighting capabilities of several area departments with funding for new equipment. Bovina VFD gets $265,000 for a new brush truck, Boys Ranch Fire/Rescue gets $300,000 for a water tender, Nazareth VFD gets $345,000 for a new water tender and slip-on unit and Vega Fire Rescue is receiving $265,000 for a large brush truck.

Former Lady Whiteface volleyball standout, Taytum Stow, was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Stow registered 19 kills and 14 blocks in two games including a career-high 16 kills against Midwestern State University on October 7th. The Lady Buffs are ranked #13 in the country.

Funeral services for Simón Salinas, age 68, are tomorrow at 2:00 at San Jose Catholic Church. Mr. Salinas worked in agriculture most of his life and at Cargill for 10 years. Mr. Salinas is remembered as a loving family man who enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. Viewing is today from 12:00-8:00 at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home. He died on Monday in Amarillo.

Xcel Energy will hold a series of town hall meetings next week regarding a new proposed transmission line that will run through the area. The Potter-Crossroads-Phantom line will run from the Amarillo area to southeastern New Mexico. The Hereford meeting is set for Tuesday, October 21st, from 5:00-7:00 at the civic center.

WEATHER: (October 15, 2025) WEDNESDAY - High yesterday was 79° at 5:00; this morning’s low was 55° at 7:00. KPANcast: Mostly sunny and breezy.

LOCAL: KPAN recorded .18 of an inch of rain this morning in downtown Hereford. The 48-hour-total stands at .2 of an inch coupled with the .02 inch recorded on Tuesday morning. The area will see chances for rain again tomorrow and cooler overnight temps through the weekend. Friday and Saturday nights will have lows near the 40° mark.

The Lady Whitefaces blanked Pampa in district volleyball last night in three sets; 25-13, 25-15 and 25-21. Lilly Madrigal had 34 assists, 23 digs and 2 aces in the win. Kyndall Valdez added 16 digs. Lexi Vallejo and Sam Grajeda were honored on Senior Night. Hereford moves to 4-7 in district play and will head to Borger on Saturday. Randall, Canyon and West Plains have clenched playoff berths out of 4-4A.

Panhandle Community Services is offering gas and electric bill assistance to qualifying individuals. The support aims to ensure families stay safe and warm in the colder months of the year. Applications for assistance are available at the PCS office at 1011 E. Park Avenue and online at www.panhandlehelp.org. Eligible residents may receive help with past-due balances or current bills. Funding is limited and is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

LOCAL: Deaf Smith County Commissioners meet this morning at 9:00 for an 11-item agenda. The regular meeting featured discussion on culvert purchases, providing fire breaks for private land owners and adopting the 2026 county calendar.

Coffee Memorial Blood Center is running on dangerously low day-to-day supply levels of blood. Our Blood Institute is currently importing blood from the east coast to meet regional demand. Local donors are needed immediately and donations can be made at CMBC in Amarillo seven days a week.

Graveside services for Tony Cano, age 91, are today at 2:00 at the Angel Fire State Veteran Cemetery. Tony was a Hereford resident since the mid-70s and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

The Lady Whitefaces and Lady Harvesters of Pampa hit the court tonight for a district volleyball match at Whiteface Gym. First serve is set for 7:00 and KPAN AM-FM will have live coverage. The Lady Herd are coming off a loss to West Plains on Saturday.

The Herd beat the Harvesters in the district opener in football Friday night, 31-14. The Whitefaces improve to 2-4 on the season with a 1-0 district record.

Herd Cross Country’s season came to an end at the district meet Friday in Canyon. Top performers for Herd XC were Manuel Carrizales - 13th place, and Sol Lara – 34th place.

LOCAL: The Whitefaces and the Harvesters open district play at Zach Thomas Stadium in Pampa tonight. Hereford and Pampa are both 1-4 on the regular season going into tonight’s game. The Harvesters had a bye last week and the Whitefaces will look to rebound from the loss to Seminole. Kickoff is set for 7:00 and KPAN AM-FM will have live coverage from Pampa.

The Lady Whitefaces are on the court tomorrow at West Plains for a 4-4A volleyball match. First serve is set for 12:00 between the 7-2 Lady Wolves and 3-6 Lady Herd. KPAN AM-FM will have live coverage.

Kay Gudgell, Chief Nursing Officer, and Veronica Gafford, Director of Quality and Infection Control, at HRMC, were named to the Panhandle Great 25 Nurses for 2025 last week. The award is given to nurses across the continuum of care who go above and beyond in clinical excellence, education, leadership and patient advocacy.

Funeral services for Helen “Elena” Dominguez Bolinger, age 61, are tomorrow morning at 11:00 at the Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home Chapel. Elena was remembered as a loving family woman and excellent cook; sharing food and feeding others was her love language. She died on Wednesday in Amarillo.

Funeral services for Ashley Martinez, age 34, are today at 11:00 at Good News Church. Ashley was a former Hereford resident who died on Friday.

The #9 Red Raiders host the Kansas Jayhawks in Big XII football in Lubbock tomorrow night. KPAN will have live coverage with pre-game beginning at 5:30.

Upper level ridging grips the region through the weekend before rain chances and cooler temps return early next week.

Registration deadline for the final Ogallala Commons Playa Field Day is this Saturday, October 11th. The field day is set for next Tuesday, October 14th, in Bushland. It will feature several speakers and tours to a playa and warm season grass trials. The day focuses on the role of grasses and playas. Call director Darryl Birkenfeld to register at 806-336-1713.
