The Sunday before last, I stopped at Buffalo Springs Lake outside of Lubbock, TX from my drive back home from Altus, OK. I came back home on a different route and the sun was getting closer to setting and Buffalo Springs was literally right there. I noticed lots of dirt roads that take you to the edge of the cliffs but I only snapped a few photos near the dam. Maybe not quite the Panhandle but close enough.

It was a little humid when I arrived at Quartz Mountain State Park, about twenty five miles north of Altus, OK. I cracked all the windows to my truck and thankfully the wind kept blowing, enough to cool me down for the night. So glad there were no mosquitoes around, if not I would have had to go somewhere else. I got a few hours of sleep and decided I was going to go for a hike to see the sunrise, something I hadn’t done in a while. It was about six in the morning when I started to hike, enough time to find my way to the top. This was on the New Horizon Trailhead. After my hike I took a dip in the lake to cool off. This was the Saturday before last.

I repeat, the Texas Panhandle is not flat. This was the Friday before last along Highway 256, on my way to Altus, Oklahoma. The family was sending off our cousin and her family to Germany. Everyone was in hotel rooms and I totally didn’t coordinate where to stay the first night. So I just took my time getting there since I left after work. I stopped at the William E Schott Rest Area on the northwest side of Caprock Canyons State Park. Then I drove down a bit to the next pull over and walked down a bit to the edge. I managed to snap a few more photos along the highway and barely got some of the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. It was about midnight when I arrived in Altus and didn’t know where I was going to stay, my first instinct, find the closest state park. Thankfully it was only 25 miles away at Quartz Mountain State Park.

Wanted to mix it up a bit this past weekend and went to Mackenzie Lake on Sunday. Did a little exploring off of South Mackenzie Road and tried to get to the other side of the lake before the skies ripped open. I thought I could wait it out but it just grew more intense, I wish I would of snapped a photo of the lake right before I drove off but it was pouring! ⛈ I drove back the same way I came, north on the 207, I stopped at the Lookout Point for a few minutes, snapped a few shots of the river, and then found this small overlook on the other side of the canyon along the 207 to see the lightning show for a bit before the rain caught up to me.

Last Saturday, once again at Lake Meredith. Growing up I had no idea all this exploring could be done out here. When I lived in Phoenix I would go to South Mountain so many times because there were so many trails to hike. Now that I do explore, it’s so incredible what we have and don’t appreciate. The natural flow of nature is being disrupted and we’re going to lose what we have left unless we truly make efforts to preserve it, to restore it, not to control it. The only folks that can make that happen, the true stewards of the land, are our Indigenous Ancestors. This was at the Middle Plum Creek Campground.

Gave MERUS Adventure Park another visit the Sunday before last. From the entrance I took Park Road North to Het’z Bluff Trail. I wanted to keep going to the edge and hike back on along the rim but didn’t give myself enough time. I hiked along the rim to Het’z Bluff, then to Cable Point, the two main lookout points to the canyon, and then right before the Drop Zone I connected back up to Park Road North to get back to the entrance. This is the northwest corner of the park where most of the rim trails are concentrated. Palo Duro Canyon State Park is only so big, I’m glad this place exists to explore a different part of the canyon.

These are from the Saturday before last, I wanted to go for a swim but couldn’t decide where. I drove down to Spring Canyon at Lake Meredith but wasn’t feeling it. I drove through the Sanford-Yake Campground, then came down to the Cedar Canyon Campground and could not decide where to get in. After consulting with Google Maps, I hiked a road up and over to the other side of the canyon and down to the lake. Took a little dip in the lake, then got harassed by some random man who misplaced his tackle box. He drove all the way down that road in his Jeep Wrangler and hiked down to the water just to ask me if I had his tackle box. đŸ€ŠđŸœâ€â™‚ïž On my way back I took another road that lead me to the cliff overlooking the Cedar Canyon Campground. I’m loving these dramatic summer stormy sunsets!

The Saturday before last at Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge at the Stewart Marsh Observation Deck. Last time I was there there was no water, what a difference a little water does. Just a little overgrowth near the deck.

Across the street from Palo Duro Canyon State Park is Palo Duro Canyon Jeep and Horseback Rides. They have three humvee rides you can choose from, one, two, and three hours. The ride reminded me of being in Twenty Nine Palms minus the troop straps! The views are phenomenal!

This was the Saturday before last at Lake Meredith along the Blue Creek. I hiked in a bit down the winding creek and up a hill to catch some better views. The views are always spectacular the higher up you go.

This was a week ago at Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Umbarger, TX. The whole time, these two birds were messing with each other, the larger one would let out a screech, they would circle around and do it again. I couldn’t zoom in too much more to get a clearer photo and on my way back an owl kept following me.
