For small business owners and h**p farmers in rural Missouri, the ongoing federal government shutdown has taken on a new, personal, and devastating dimension. A high-stakes political showdown over a controversial proposal to ban h**p-derived THC products nationwide has become a central bargaining chip in Washington D.C., and it now threatens to prolong the shutdown while simultaneously wiping out an entire local industry.

For this week’s recommendation from the Scenic Regional Library, I’m delighted to suggest a book that pulls back the curtain on a true superstar: Cher by Cher.

This first volume in Cher’s biography series is a 400-page journey filled with the juicy gossip and heartfelt stories that have defined her incredible life. The book begins with the profound influence of her mother, Georgia, who shaped Cher’s path long before she stepped into the spotlight.

If you’ve ever looked at a pigeon and seen a prehistoric creature, you’re not wrong. That was the central message from retired history teacher and avid paleontological enthusiast Ray Ham, who delivered a captivating lecture Tuesday evening at the Scenic Regional Library’s Hermann branch. Ham guided the attendees through millions of years of evidence to make a compelling case: not all dinosaurs went extinct; some just grew feathers and learned to fly.

Watch the full video on the website. -- For the uninitiated, the “Duck Dance” is a cultural phenom probably started at a wedding in South St. Louis and expanded by wedding bands and bands with some old scrubby Dutch musicians having a little fun and creating a viral song and dance that lives on with the Loehnig German Band in Hermann attempting to break a world record as having the largest number of Duck Dancers on the dance floor at the Festhalle in Hermann, MO. Who knows? Maybe they pulled it off. Cheryl Schwartze said Guiness called to confirm.

Many people in town took no notice of the over one hundred protestors gathered in front of the Gasconade County Courthouse on Saturday, October 18, 2025, for the “No Kings” protest, a peaceful demonstration against what they see as a rising tide of authoritarianism in American politics. Waving flags and holding signs, the group, which was larger than a similar event held in June, voiced its support for democracy and its opposition to political figures they believe are threatening the foundations of the republic.
