Rescue dog brings great joy to my family
by Wade Petrich - Star Columnist
So after months of debate, searching, contemplating, giving up and then finally giving in, our family found a dog. It appears that it has been the hip and now thing to do during this COVID-19 quarantine.
We ended up finding a rescue dog that was the perfect fit. With a family of five, one has to compromise. I wanted a Golden Retriever, others wanted a short-hair dog. I was looking for a purebred, others wanted a rescue dog. I was thinking we should get a puppy, others wanted a dog that was a bit older.
If you noticed a trend, it was that my votes were vetoed over the dynamics of the family democracy. After the first couple of weeks with the new pooch, I am glad I was overruled.
The biggest concern was lifestyle. It was not right to get a dog when we were adjusting to our new lifestyle during this pandemic. Things are going to change. Our lives are going to get busy again. This coronavirus will pass (although a new virus could be nipping at its heels).
Yet our family had a dog for many years and the benefits far outweighed the downside. While we live an active lifestyle, a dog makes it active in another way, a healthy one.
We found our rescue dog, Xena, through Northern Lakes Rescue. One day a family member found her profile and every aspect and character trait was a plus mark. In many ways it was shocking to have such a great match.
Of course, while my kids felt we would go pick up the dog that day, I told them we had to apply and be accepted in our adoption process. Filling out all the paperwork online took time as well. I learned recently that the criteria for adoption is somewhat elaborate and all encompassing. We had applied to be a foster family for a Golden Retriever rescue agency in the Twin Cities area, only to be rejected because we mentioned that the dog “could” stay in our attached garage or in our fenced garden outside for short periods of time.
