πŸ—οΈ **A Wireframe, Mockup and Prototype Are Not the Same Thing!**

Imagine designing a house:

πŸ“ A **wireframe** is like the floor plan.
🎨 A **mockup** shows how the finished rooms may look.
🚢 A **high-fidelity prototype** is like a realistic virtual walkthrough.

The same idea applies to software:

🧱 **Wireframe β€” Structure**
A simple layout using boxes, lines and labels. It answers: **What goes where?**

πŸ–ΌοΈ **Mockup β€” Appearance**
A polished, usually static design with colors, fonts, images and branding. It answers: **How will it look?**

πŸ–±οΈ **High-Fidelity Prototype β€” Experience**
A realistic and clickable version that simulates the user journey. It answers: **How will it work?**

πŸ• For a food-delivery app, the wireframe positions the cart and checkout button, the mockup adds food photos and branding, and the prototype lets users place a test order.

Each artifact validates something differentβ€”and helps prevent expensive misunderstandings.

Difference Between Business Process Standard Notations and BPMN 2.0

What is a Business Process?
Business Process is a step-by-step ex*****on of tasks (done in a sequential manner), in which each task takes an input, processes it and creates an output for the next task until all the tasks are successfully executed.

Why to execute a Business Process?
To create value. Either tangible or intangible.

Tangible Value: An app, software, device, car, furniture etc.
I
ntangible Value: Training (Learning and Development), Career Counselling, or some sort of service.

How to create it?
Business Process can be best captured, analyzed, improved and monitored through visualization. Creating a Business Process requires set of notations, commonly called as icons, symbols, objects or elements.

There are two different types of notations, which can be used to capture Business Process.

(A) Standard/Common Notations/Symbols.
(B) Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN 2.0).

While there is no cookie-cutter answer in terms of which one is better than the other one, I personally favor BPMN 2.0. 😊

In the below poster, you can find the difference between the standard/common notations and BPMN 2.0. 😊

If you are new to Business Process Modeling, my recommendation is to start with Standard/Common Notations/Symbols and then transition to Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN 2.0). BPMN 2.0 gives you freedom, flexibility to capture way more complex business processes in a better way and most important, let's you orchestrate a business process on a BPM engine.

Happy Reading.

08/13/2026

Business Process Mapping is one of the most critical technical skills for anyone involved in Business Analysis, Gap Analysis, Digital Transformation, Business Process Management, Strategy-Level Analysis etc.

Surprisingly, many seasoned professionals make mistakes in mapping the business processes. For example, a modeler wants to convey a process in a particular way but it gets translated in a different way. So, now we have two different versions of the same business process flow.

Version 1: What a modeler has in mind.

Version 2: What is actually captured in the business process.

Sounds familiar?

Additionally, most of the modelers make the following common mistakes:

(1) Not using the right vocabulary.

(2) No standardization of business process model notations.

(3) Start a business process without a defined trigger event.

(4) Using a gateway that doesn't have incoming or outgoing flows.

(5) Keeping the business process in a deadlock state i.e. there is no way a process can move forward or go back.

(6) Fail to use notations, which can enrich your business process models.

(7) Adding notation unnecessary, making the business process too long, complex and confusing.

Below you can find a quick summary of the most commonly used business process notations, it's meaning along with a simple business process model/diagram.
