In 2022, Robert Earl Keen said he was retiring from touring. But, as he tells it, after a while, while playing for a kids birthday party, he got the feeling he'd like to play for grown ups again. That is what brought him to The Birchmere, the legendary Alexandria, Va. listening room/supper club Friday night for the first of three shows there this weekend.

Accompanied by his longtime sideman Brian Beken on fiddle and guitar, REK turned in a fine set that included many of his "best ofs" like The Road Goes On Forever, Corpus Christi Bay, Feelin' Good Again, Merry Christmas From The Family, Gr**go Honeymoon, I'm Comin' Home, a cover of Todd Snider's Play a Train Song before wrapping up with the customary I Gotta Go for an encore.

Tonight's show is sold out, but there are still tickets available for Sunday night. After that, if you want to catch him live, you will have to head down to Texas, or wait until November when he has a pair of dates in Alabama. There is also a Denver date in December on his schedule to close out the year.

Events and venues are facing tremendous pressure. Kudos to these folks for braving the waters and promoting local music. Buying advance tickets is a great way to show you support their efforts.

Took a drive up I-81 to Wilkes-Barre this evening to see Dave Brown and The Dishonest Fiddlers as part of that Downtown Wilkes-Barre's free summer outdoor happy hour concert series Sunsets on SOMA.

In May of 2024, Rhonda Vincent got an on-stage visit from her daughter Sally and new granddaughter Faye Monroe, with Sally joining the band for a few numbers. Faye and Sally were back at Gettysburg yesterday. This time Faye was ready to steal the show, singing a tune, then joining the band on her "guitar."
