A DOG NAMED NASH KEPT BRINGING TOYS TO THE MAN WHO BROKE INTO HIS FAMILY'S SAN DIEGO HOME

Dante Rowley and his fiancée were 30,000 feet in the air flying home from Chicago when they checked their Ring camera and found a stranger inside their Sherman Heights home. The man had climbed a fence, grabbed a ladder from their shed, and let himself in through a second-story window.

Instead of raising the alarm, their 4-year-old, 90-pound golden retriever, Nash, tried to make friends. The intruder took off his shirt and shoes, raided the fridge for yogurt, turkey, and cheese, and eventually settled in for a nap on the floor, all while Nash repeatedly brought him toys hoping to start a game of fetch. The man never took the bait.

Rowley coordinated with San Diego police in real time from his phone, giving them a play-by-play as officers arrived, sent in a drone, and searched the home. When police finally came through the door, Nash greeted them the same way he'd greeted the intruder, toy in mouth, tail wagging. The man tried to escape through a bathroom window but was caught by officers waiting in the backyard and arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary. Rowley said nothing was stolen and the only damage was some broken pots from the escape attempt.

"He's not the greatest guard dog," Rowley said. "We thought he was going to bark at people, and he did the exact opposite."

A TEXAS POLICE DEPARTMENT WAS SHUT DOWN AFTER THE STATE RULED IT PROVIDED "NO PUBLIC BENEFIT"

The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement has revoked the Trinidad Police Department's license to operate, disbanding the five-officer force in this Henderson County town of about 800 people. In a September 9 letter to Mayor Dennis Haws, TCOLE said the department "failed to meet minimum standards" and was "unable to provide evidence that the agency provides public benefit to the community."

The shutdown follows the May arrest of resident Jennifer Combs, who posted on Facebook alleging that bacteria in the town's water had hospitalized residents and asking others to share their own experiences with discolored or foul-smelling water. Police charged her with a state jail felony for allegedly creating "fear, panic, or unnecessary emergency response," and she spent close to 24 hours in jail. The city itself had already issued its own boil-water advisory weeks earlier, acknowledging the same contamination risk Combs described. A Henderson County grand jury later declined to indict her.

A second person, citizen journalist Winston Noles, was also arrested on a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge after displaying a sign supporting Combs outside city hall. Both cases eventually collapsed. The fallout included the resignation of the police chief and several other city officials.

TCOLE's inspection also found the department missing 18 required policies, including guidelines on use of force, vehicle pursuits, and active-shooter response, along with insufficient bullet-resistant vests and no adequate evidence storage. The Henderson County Sheriff's Office will now handle law enforcement for Trinidad.

A 7-YEAR-OLD ESCAPED HER UNCLE'S HOME AFTER MONTHS OF STARVATION AND ABUSE, RAN TO A NEIGHBOR FOR HELP

A 7-year-old California girl escaped from the mobile home where authorities say she had been severely ab*sed, running to a neighbor for help. She arrived covered in bruises, scars, burn marks, and a black eye, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.

The neighbor called police, who found the girl had been living with her uncle, Devin Hughes, 39, and his girlfriend, Kayla Reynolds, 32. She told deputies the pair had cut her hair with a pocketknife, burned her with v**e pens, and st*rved her, among other severe mistreatment described in the DA's report. She appeared severely malnourished when deputies found her.

When investigators searched the home, they described finding "horrendous living conditions" along with items that corroborated her account, including v**es, zip ties, and cable locks. Hughes and Reynolds, who have three children of their own, were arr*sted on multiple felony charges, including torture, child ab*se, corporal injury, mayhem, and ass*ult likely to cause great bodily injury. In March, both pleaded guilty to 15 counts connected to the abuse. The girl's health has since improved, and she gained five pounds during hospital treatment.

A WEST VIRGINIA WOMAN LEFT HER DISABLED HUSBAND ON THE TOILET FOR 19 HOURS, HE DIED 11 DAYS LATER

Margaret Louise Rog, 75, of Morgantown, has been charged with abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult after authorities say she left her 76-year-old husband unattended on the toilet for about 19 hours, ultimately contributing to his death.

According to a criminal complaint, the man, who had dementia, Alzheimer's disease, legal blindness, and several other medical conditions, went to the bathroom around 3 p.m. on August 20. When Rog was unable to help him stand back up, she left him there without food, water, or his prescribed medications. Deputies say Rog heard him groaning in pain during the night, did not call anyone for help, and went to bed instead.

He remained on the toilet until roughly 10 a.m. the next morning, when a speech therapist arrived for an in-home visit, found him unresponsive and in dangerously poor condition, and called an ambulance. He was hospitalized and died on August 31. Investigators determined his injuries and medical complications from being left there were significant contributing factors in his death.

According to court documents, Rog made several statements to law enforcement, adult protection services, and family members that were self-incriminating, indicating she understood her husband needed help but chose not to provide it. She pleaded not guilty and was released after posting a $75,000 bond.

A NEWLY ELECTED TENNESSEE SHERIFF'S WIFE WAS ARRESTED FOR THEFT JUST WEEKS AFTER HIS SWEARING-IN

Rachel Sawyers, wife of newly elected Carroll County, Tennessete Sheriff Eric Sawyers, was arrested Monday and charged with theft of property over $1,000 and fraudulent use of a debit card. Her husband was elected August 6 and sworn in August 31; her court date is set for September 25.

The charges stem from a Tennessee Comptroller's Office investigation into the Clarksburg School Parent-Teacher Organization, which supports the roughly 300-student pre-K-12 school in Huntingdon. Rachel Sawyers served as the group's treasurer and vice president from December 2023 until resigning in November 2025. Investigators say she misappropriated at least $1,490, making personal Amazon and Walmart purchases on the organization's debit card without the board approval every transaction was supposed to require. When confronted, she reportedly told investigators the purchases were for personal use.

Board members said the theft came to light after new members reviewed the group's finances and asked Sawyers to hand over records, which she was slow to provide. In October 2025, she made several cash deposits totaling $2,039 back into the account based on her own calculations of what she owed, with a final deposit coming in November, after the new treasurer had already conducted an internal review.

The investigation also flagged an additional $2,181.38 in undocumented transactions by former board members, which investigators could not fully account for due to a lack of records. Findings have been forwarded to the District Attorney General's office, the governor, the state attorney general, and state legislators.

THE LONE HOLDOUT JUROR IN THE LINDSAY CLANCY MISTRIAL WAS THE ONLY BLACK PERSON ON THE PANEL, A JUROR SAYS

Lindsay Clancy, 36, was on trial for the January 2023 deaths of her three children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan, in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Her defense argued she was not criminally responsible due to postpartum psychosis. On September 4, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial after the jury reported an 11-1 deadlock following more than seven days of deliberation.

Juror Paula Devlin, part of the 11-person majority who favored finding Clancy not criminally responsible, discussed the case in an interview with CBS Mornings host Gayle King on September 11. Devlin said the jury was made up of nine women and three men, ranging in age from 22 to about 70, and that only one juror was a person of color, a Black man in his 30s, who was also the sole holdout voting that Clancy should be found guilty of murder. King's visible reaction to learning the holdout's race, saying "I have to sit with that for just a second," drew significant public commentary and backlash across social media in the days that followed.

Devlin said she and other jurors spent days trying to persuade the holdout to change his position, without success. Another juror, Nick Dargie, said the holdout could not point to specific evidence or testimony to support his stance. Clancy's defense attorney has filed a motion seeking to have the mistrial thrown out and Clancy acquitted, with a hearing set for September 29.

AN NBC NEWS HELICOPTER CRASHED IN LOS ANGELES WHILE COVERING A DEADLY BUS COLLISION

Aerial photojournalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw were k*lled Tuesday evening when NewsChopper4, operated by Angel City Air for NBC Los Angeles and Telemundo 52, crashed in the Chatsworth area of the San Fernando Valley. A pedestrian on the ground was also k*lled, and two other people were taken to the hospital.

The crash happened just before 7 p.m. as the helicopter was covering a separate fatal Metro bus collision. Moreno, known to viewers as "Eli in the Heli," had worked in aerial news for years and had flown alongside Marciniw, a Southern California native with more than 30 years of flight experience, since 2023. The pair were known as "the eyes and ears in the sky" for Los Angeles newsrooms, frequently sharing behind-the-scenes photos from their flights together.

Moreno had gotten engaged to Robert Barrientos less than a year earlier. NBC4 and Telemundo 52 released a joint statement saying they were "deeply saddened" and extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those lost. The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are investigating the cause of the crash.

A HOME CARE WORKER POURED BLEACH INTO HIS DISABLED CLIENT'S WATER BOTTLE AND SAID "HERE, DRINK THIS"

Reginald Andre Wilson, 30, a home care worker with Heaven on Earth in Lake Charles, Louisiana, has been arrested after security footage allegedly showed him pouring a substance from a large jug into a water bottle inside his client's home.

According to police, Wilson returned the jug to the home's laundry area, shook the bottle, and handed it to his client, saying, "Here, drink this." Detectives say the client, who is physically and mentally disabled, drank from the bottle and noticed it tasted like bleach. When a family member confronted Wilson, he reportedly admitted to pouring bleach into the bottle.

The client's family shared the footage on social media and reported the incident to police, saying they're demanding justice. Wilson has been fired from his position and faces charges of aggravated battery, mingling harmful substances, and cruelty to persons with infirmities.

A 5-YEAR-OLD BOY D!ED IN A HOT CAR WHILE HIS FAMILY HOSTED A PARTY WITH 50 GUESTS

Theo Sabo, 5, d!ed after being left in a hot car outside his family's Phoenix-area home near 67th Avenue and Happy Valley Road. Police say his parents, Mihail and Anca Sabo, had returned home from another child's baptism around 1 p.m. and began hosting a gathering with roughly 50 friends and relatives, and Theo never made it inside.

The family didn't realize he was missing until after 3:45 p.m., more than two and a half hours later. His mother found him unresponsive inside the vehicle. Relatives performed CPR before first responders took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced d3ad. Temperatures that day reached approximately 106 degrees.

Mihail and Anca were arr*sted and charged with negligent homicide and child ab*se. According to authorities, Mihail told investigators he had asked the couple's 14-year-old son to get Theo out of the car after they arrived home, but the teen told police he did not remember being asked to do that.

At separate court hearings this week, Anca was seen sobbing while Mihail kept his head down. Their attorney, Leah Dodd, called it "a tragedy" and argued that Mihail asking a 14-year-old to help was not unreasonable given how many people were at the house that day. The couple has four other children, ages 18, 15, 14, and 9.

A TOKYO TEACHER BROKE INTO A HOME WITH TWO OF HIS OWN STUDENTS TO STEAL "PURE GOLD" TEMPLE BELLS

Ryosuke Kimura, 26, a teacher at a Tokyo metropolitan high school, has been arrested on suspicion of trespassing and attempted theft after allegedly breaking into a home with two of his own male students.

According to Tokyo Reporter, police say the trio entered the Tokyo home of a man in his 70s around 8 p.m. on February 2, climbing through an unlocked window after assuming the property was empty. They fled without taking anything after spotting freshly bought vegetables and hearing noises that made them realize someone was inside.

Investigators say Kimura had been actively coaching the students on what to steal, allegedly telling them, "Buddhist altar bells are made of pure gold and sell for a high price, so you should look for those." He's also accused of teaching them how to resell stolen items, including rings and gold teeth, through flea market smartphone apps.

Kimura reportedly told police he had heard the students were already breaking into abandoned houses and went along "out of curiosity, like a test of courage." Police are continuing to investigate whether the teacher and his students may be connected to other unsolved burglaries in the area.
