Baston later testified against McNeal in the resulting case. McNeal ultimately pleaded guilty to felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearm charges and was sentenced to prson as a fourth-time habitual offender.
He was paroled in October 2024.
On March 20, 2025 — five months after McNeal's release — Marquaveus Baston, now 22 years old, was sitting in the driver's seat of a parked car in the Birch Park Apartments parking lot. The same complex where all of this began. Surveillance footage captured a hooded figure approaching the vehicle and opening fire. Baston was k*lled at the scene.
McNeal was arrsted and charged with open mrder, carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and three counts of felony firearm — seven counts in total. Prosecutors told the jury there was "no if, and, or but about it" that McNeal was the sh**ter.
The defense pushed back hard. They argued investigators had tunnel vision — that police focused so heavily on the prior history between McNeal and Baston that they failed to fully pursue other leads that could have pointed to a different suspect. McNeal did not take the stand.

Undercover officers tracked it down and went to make an arr*st — and that's when Kenneth Bullock pulled up in a rental car, claiming the Charger was his and presenting a title for it. He was taken into custody alongside the seller.
The problem was the title Bullock had was fr*udulent — part of a chain of forged documents the car had passed through after the original theft. Investigators later confirmed that Bullock had purchased the vehicle from someone else entirely and had no known connection to the original carjacking or anyone involved in it. Despite this, and despite the fact that Bullock's physical description did not fully match what Russell had initially told police, she picked him out of a lineup. That identification sent him to trial.
A jury convcted Bullock of carjacking, armed rbbery, and felony firearm possession. A judge sentenced him to 32 to 72 years in prson. He was 34 years old. He maintained his innocence from the moment he was arrsted to the day he walked out of pr*son.
