A baby squirrel fell through the roof of an office building — so we gave them the same advice we give anyone who finds a baby squirrel.
Before doing anything, check the baby:
• Make sure there are no fly larvae on it.
• Make sure the baby is warm to the touch.
• Check for any obvious injuries or bleeding.
If the baby is warm, alert and uninjured, the best thing you can do is try to reunite it with its mother.
Here’s how:
• Fill a sock or small bag with uncooked rice and microwave it for about 30 seconds. Make sure it’s warm, not hot.
• Find a shallow box and place the warm rice sock, a soft blanket and the baby squirrel inside.
• Put the box as close as possible to where you found the baby, in a safe location.
• Play baby squirrel distress sounds from your phone to help mom locate her baby.
• Then walk away. Hide in your car or watch from a nearby window so mom feels safe enough to return.
Give mom an hour or two to come back. Mother squirrels often have more than one nest in the area, so she may be nearby caring for other babies.
If mom does not return, bring the baby inside and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
Never give a baby squirrel food, formula or water. Until you can get professional help, keep the baby warm, dark and quiet.
More often than not, mom will come back for her baby.
