The map may survive. The survey data behind it might not.

Every line on a cave map represents hours underwater, careful measurement, note-taking, and teamwork. Lose the data, and much of that work can be very difficult to replace.

A survey folder can tell a familiar story: one file, another dated copy, an older version somewhere in the archive, and the constant question of which one is actually current. For Skanda Coffield-Feith, this became a real problem as survey projects grew and data accumulated.

His own approach evolved from handwritten notes and dated survey files to cloud storage, but the problem remained: keeping track of the data, protecting it from loss, and knowing which version was current.

The article looks at how SpeleoDB approaches these challenges through version history, controlled access, backups, and collaboration, including its use in larger team projects such as the PURE resurvey of Mexicoโ€™s Ponderosa Cave system.

On an expedition team, being qualified is only the baseline.

Trust comes from the things that happen before and during the dive: preparation, communication, reliability, judgment, and knowing when to say no.

For Caitlyn โ€œKatyโ€ Kohler, being part of a dive team means more than reaching the objective. It means being someone others can depend on when things matter.

The T-REB started with a problem that was very practical: how to get away from a heavy backmounted CCR without giving up the breathing performance and stability needed for serious technical and cave diving.

The answer was not simply to make a backmounted rebreather smaller. The T-REB was designed around sidemount from the beginning, with the dimensions and handling of an 80 cu ft stage cylinder as a reference.

That decision shaped everything from the attachment points and hydrodynamics to the position of the counterlungs and the breathing loop. Low work of breathing in horizontal trim became one of the central design requirements.

The result is a compact CCR that can be carried and handled much like a stage cylinder while incorporating onboard oxygen and meaningful scrubber capacity.

The article follows the T-REB from its first prototype through field testing, CE certification, and its current development.

Dear friends.

Over the past year, InDepth's website reached 365,000+ readers and 625,000+ pageviews, representing approximately 38% growth in visitors and 36% growth in pageviews over the previous period.

What makes us happiest is not just the bigger peaks.
The everyday readership has grown too.

Since February 2024, InDEPTH has now recorded more than 771,000 visitors and 1.33 million page views.

Thank you to our writers, photographers, researchers, editors, sponsors and, most importantly, everyone who keeps reading.

We have a lot more coming.

When David Doolette, Jarrod Jablonski, Mark Powell and Simon Mitchell all agree to sit down for the same decompression discussion, you pay attention.

It is a wide-ranging conversation about one of technical divingโ€™s most persistent problems: we can calculate decompression with extraordinary precision, but that does not mean we understand the physiology with the same certainty.

What has genuinely changed in decompression practice, what we have moved away from, and what the numbers can, and cannot, tell us.

This is not four experts giving us another deco recipe. It is four of the most influential voices in modern technical diving and decompression asking how much confidence we should really place in the tools we use every day.

Ultimately, the conversation lands somewhere less comfortable than a perfect algorithm:

And there is plenty more in the September issue:

- Andrzej Paล‚ucha takes us inside the thinking behind the T-REB CCR
- Caitlyn โ€œKatyโ€ Kohler looks at what it really takes to belong on a serious deep wreck expedition
- Kim Davidsson reflects on more than two decades of cave exploration in Mexico
- Skanda Coffield-Feith tackles ownership and continuity of cave-survey data
- Jarrod Jablonski looks at mentors, teammates and the communities that shape us
- Alton J. Hall, Jr. asks whether the professional liability insurance you bought actually provides the coverage you think it does.
A strong September issue, and a decompression discussion I think many of us will want to argue with.

Record chasing can produce meaningful achievements, but when a target becomes more important than the achievement itself, the pursuit can become problematic.

The interaction of physics and physiology creates difficult-to-define limits in diving. Individual tolerance, workload, stress, skill, breathing gas, and chance can all affect the outcome. Getting away with a boundary-pushing dive once, or even several times, does not necessarily make it safe or safe for others.

Neal W. Po***ck considers when a record is worth pursuing, the importance of maintaining safety margins, and the responsibility that comes with record attempts that may influence those who follow.
