They imagined a space where diverse perspectives could meet, and where the evolving sport of scuba diving could be explored and celebrated. That vision grew into InDEPTH Magazine.

Ever wondered if the 1.3 PPO₂ “safety ceiling” for technical diving was actually built on shaky ground?

Because of fresh science & real-world data, 1.3 ATA may no longer be a conservative “ceiling” — it could become your new baseline for long, deep dives.

For decades, these old O2 limits as gospel — the red-line beyond which CNS-oxygen toxicity loomed. But what if that line was drawn on assumptions, not evidence?

The new landmark study by a team led by Simon Mitchell shows that working dives of four hours at 1.3 ATA followed by four hours of decompression appear to carry an acceptably low risk of CNS oxygen toxicity — at least far lower than we once believed.

That doesn’t mean zero risk. “Acceptable” doesn’t equal “safe enough to ignore.” But for technical divers — cave explorers, wreck hunters, rebreather masters — this recalibration could change the game. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲, the wreck feels alive. Steel corridors breathe silt at the slightest fin pivot. Machinery rooms swallow light. Hospital wards echo with the dull weight of water pressing from all sides. There are no reliable diagrams to trust — only discipline, team coherence, and the ability to keep your pulse steady when the environment whispers otherwise.

For technical divers, 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿: true depth is not measured in meters, but in how completely you must rely on training, on protocols, and on the diver beside you.
