On July 12th the comic book world lost an immense talent in Marcelo Basile. I was introduced to his work by Ed Lavallee in Pop Star Assassin.

Marcelo was a blast to work with, and anytime there was a revision suggestion, he would sweetly reply, "No problem, hugs"

The thing you see instantly in his work is personality. There's no throw away characters in the background (the guy on the Tap Dance Killer cover with his mouth agape and the bad hair.) His Bloom cover is movie poster-esque.

Marcelo also did a set of Vaude-Villain pinups where I just let him run free, and they're just fantasmagorical. I mean, look at those shoes on Sir Terror!

I had reached out several times to do a story together, but he was always solidly booked. I'll regret that we didn't get to do more, but am so grateful for the ones we did.

To his family and friends, thanks for sharing him with the comic book world, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

Rest in power, Mr Basile. Eternal thanks for the care you took with all of our stories and characters.

Amazing day in Cleveland history -- Congrats to Mike Sangiacomo who started the movement back in 2007, then worked tirelessly with the Siegel & Shuster Society to get the city of Cleveland to showcase the creation of the most iconic character in all of comics.

Kudos and gratitude to all involved, and to all who donated.

Having spent the last fifteen years developing the Cleveland-based Hero Tomorrow Comics universe, my hometown pride and geek meters went way off the scales. It was an honor to take part.

Don't miss the unveiling of the Superman statue in Cleveland today honoring creators Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster who met at Glenville High School in Cleveland.

I will be set up there with other local creators to celebrate the character whose cape-tails have given ride to all of us.

The Siegel & Shuster Society has worked toward a Superman statue in Cleveland for years, and Saturday morning that is coming true at the corner of St. Clair and Ontario downtown.

Last year I realized one of the things that makes San Diego Comic-Con International challenging is the insane amount of jaw dropping talent on the floor. From artists to writers to editors to publishers, distributors - it spins heads.

This year our new character, the mystic healer Violante The Undead, showed up and tried to heal my difficulties by, um…well, taking out the competition. Thankfully I stopped her short of all that, but did manage to snap an action pic or two along the way (thought it was very Peter Parker of me tbh)

When all the receipts and credit card statements are counted it will land very close to the top of our most successful treks to the mother ship.

Biggest thanks to the talented Christina Sirmons for so brilliantly embodying Violante (Dress by Beets Barlow)

Cheers also to the creators who are with me at every show Milo Miller, Benito Gallego Donny Hadiwidjaja Butch Mapa Yvel Guichet and all the cover artists who have joined the family over these fifteen years.

RIP Jim Shooter.

I am forever grateful for the stories that came out during Jim Shooter's time as a writer and/or Editor in Chief at Marvel Comics throughout the 70s and 80s — from Moench/Sienkiewicz's Moon Knight to Miller's Daredevil to Claremont/Byrne's X-Men to his own Secret Wars. That was a great time to be going through formative years.

in 2017 I was fortunate to be next to him at a convention where, near the conclusion, I worked up the nerve to hand him our Tap Dance Killer series asking for feedback. He said, "I will read it, but I have to warn you, I'm going to be honest."

A couple months later he sent a glowing note which included a pull quote for the book.

The next time I saw him was at Big Apple Con a couple years later. He said he wanted to get together and share some comic biz insights with me. I was anxious to take him up on this, but his schedule proved pretty tough to crack.

In October of last year when it was reported that he was going through cancer treatments I sent him a note of gratitude and wished him well. He replied, "We should work out a time to talk. I have a very busy schedule of naps, treatments, naps, telemeds, naps, and naps. : ) What's a good time for you to have a phone chat? I think I can stay awake for that."

Somehow, during those painful treatments he found the time to have that session with me. During the call I was blown away by his level of thinking. The talk led to further correspondence where he shared even more comprehensive thoughts and examples on what makes for a great story, layouts, panels, color theory, and inking.

His talent level as a writer and editor speaks for itself, but Jim Shooter's generosity can not be overstated.

Thank you, Mr. Shooter, for the stories, for the lessons, for the kindness.

I'll do my best to make you proud.

Hero Tomorrow Comics writer Ted Sikora is auctioning off one of his most prized possessions. It's the original art from Amazing Spider-Man #311 1989. Penciled AND INKED by the great Todd McFarlane. It's the page where SPIDEY soundly defeats MYSTERIO!

Whatever it goes for will be funneled directly into the Hero Tomorrow Comics verse to create new issues. If you're in the market for it, not only do you get an amazing piece, but are also financing the creation of future art!
