A 40-year-old woman from Westland was arrested Thursday for allegedly smuggling drugs into Lakeland Correctional Facility. Michigan State Police said the woman visited the prison between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. and was detained during her visit. She was booked into the Branch County Jail on a felony charge. Although police have not officially named the woman, jail records indicate Shonda Lecar Ruffin was lodged on one count of smuggling contraband into prison. ...

Construction of Hillsdale County’s 800 Megahertz emergency communications system is expected to be completed by mid-2026. 9-1-1 Director Thomas Whitaker updated the Hillsdale County Board of Commissioners on the project earlier this week. Local unemployment numbers decreased across Michigan last month. Hillsdale County reported a 5.4 percent unemployment rate in August. That’s down from 6.4 percent in July—reversing a trend of rising unemployment over the past three months. Wayne Rourke of the Michigan Center for Data & Analytics said all of the state’s major labor markets saw decreases. Some of the decrease could be attributed to fewer job seekers in the market. ...
