The competition at the surfing championships at Ho’okipa on Maui is mean. Only three Big Island surfers finished in the top three of their heats today to advance to the quarterfinals. HAAS’ bodyboarder Felix Barton had one of the highest scores of the entire contest with a single wave score of 9.83 and a combined score of 17.16, Waiakea’s Penelope Ruth-Conley finished second in her bodyboard heat and Connections’ Keano Crawford also advanced to tomorrow’s longboard quarterfinals. The champions who received byes into the quarterfinals are HAAS’ longboarders Amaya and Alex Ranne, bodyboarders Ella Koenigs of Kealakehe and Isaiah Ishigo of Hilo.
