🚨 HURRICANE NOLO UPDATE — 5 AM SATURDAY

Hurricane Nolo remains nearly stationary south of the Big Island, but it is still packing 105 MPH winds with stronger gusts.

📍 145 miles south of South Point
🌀 Nolo is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane tonight or early Sunday.
🌧️ 4–8 inches of additional rain is expected across eastern and southern parts of the Big Island, with isolated totals up to 10 inches. Storm totals could reach 10–20 inches, with maximum amounts of 25 inches.
⚠️ Life-threatening flooding and mudslides remain possible, especially in steep terrain.
💨 Strong, gusty winds are possible across all Hawaiian Islands through the weekend.
🌊 Large, dangerous waves and life-threatening surf and rip currents are expected along exposed shores.
🌊 Storm surge of 1–3 feet is possible along parts of the Hawaii County coast.

Hurricane Nolo is now a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 MPH and is moving north-northeast about 5 MPH.
📍 Nolo is about 175 miles south of South Point, Hawaiʻi Island.
⚠️ Hawaii County remains under a Hurricane Watch AND Tropical Storm Warning. Hurricane conditions are possible as early as Saturday, especially in areas of steep terrain.
🌧️ BIG ISLAND RAINFALL THREAT: • Eastern & southern Big Island: 10–15 inches, with isolated totals up to 25 inches • Western Big Island: 2–4 inches, with maximum amounts up to 8 inches • Catastrophic, life-threatening flooding and mudslides are possible, especially in steep terrain.
🌊 COASTAL & SURF HAZARDS: • Storm surge of 1–3 feet is possible along Hawaii County coastlines. • Large, dangerous waves are expected, with life-threatening surf and rip currents along exposed east- and south-facing shores. • Swells will build through the weekend and spread westward.

🚨 HURRICANE NOLO UPDATE — 5:00 AM HST 🚨

Hurricane Nolo continues moving north-northeast at about 5 mph and is now about 210 miles south of South Point.

🌧️ BIG ISLAND FLOODING THREAT
The biggest concern remains catastrophic, life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides, especially across the eastern and southern portions of the Big Island.

💧 Rainfall Forecast:
• Eastern & Southern Big Island: 10–15 inches, with maximum amounts up to 25 inches
• Western Big Island: 2–4 inches, with maximum amounts up to 8 inches
• Maui: 4–6 inches, with maximum amounts up to 10 inches

🌬️ WIND
Nolo has maximum sustained winds of 85 MPH, with higher gusts. Tropical-storm conditions are expected to begin on the Big Island tonight, with hurricane conditions possible by early Saturday, particularly in areas of steep terrain.

5 PM HST | Thursday, September 24
Hurricane Nolo has strengthened into a hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 75 MPH. Air Force reconnaissance found Nolo about 270 miles south of South Point and moving north-northeast at 5 MPH.

⚠️ HURRICANE WATCH + TROPICAL STORM WARNING remain in effect for Hawaii County.

🌧️ HEAVY RAINFALL IS A MAJOR THREAT
The Big Island could see significant rainfall over the next several days:
• East & South Hawaii Island: 15–30 inches, with locally higher amounts up to 35 inches
• West Hawaii Island: 5–8 inches, with maximum amounts up to 10 inches
• Dangerous, life-threatening flooding and mudslides are possible, especially in steep terrain.

💨 WINDS: Tropical-storm conditions are expected to begin by late Friday, with hurricane conditions possible by early Saturday.

🌊 STORM SURGE: 1–3 feet above ground is possible along parts of Hawaii County, with the greatest impacts near the immediate coast.

🌊 SURF: Large swells will reach exposed east- and south-facing shores Friday and build through the weekend, creating dangerous surf and rip-current conditions.

📍 Nolo is forecast to turn sharply westward Saturday, just south of the Big Island, with additional strengthening expected.

Tropical Storm Nolo is strengthening and is nearing hurricane strength. A Tropical Storm Warning is now in effect for Hawaiʻi County, while a Hurricane Watch remains in effect for the Big Island.

🌪️ Current conditions: • Maximum sustained winds: 70 mph, with higher gusts
• Moving north at 2 mph
• About 285 miles south of South Point
• Nolo is forecast to become a hurricane tonight and a major hurricane by this weekend

⚠️ BIG ISLAND IMPACTS 🌧️ Rain: 15–30 inches, with maximum amounts up to 35 inches possible. Catastrophic, life-threatening flooding and mudslides are possible, especially in steep terrain.
